how accurate can your G20 10mm get?
« on: November 09, 2007, 04:03:19 PM »
got one a few months ago but really haven't put it to the accuracy/grouping test

I have a bunch of doubletap ammo on hand

I bought it mainly because I wanted something mean, tough and with a tac light capability
I put the TruGlo TFOs on it which probably won't lend themselves to ultra tight groups but I was just kind of curious how accurate at 25 and 50 yards you guys have got the G20 to be...

shooter and "glock" trigger control aside
I have quite a few handguns, 1911, smith and wesson 357 mag, ruger blackhawk bisley hunter 44, etc..

thanks

How accurate do you need it?  I bought my Glock for personal protection, and normally shoot it at 7-10 yards.  At that range I can easily make fist sized groups.  Assuming I need it to protect myself that is the range needed, and I don't want one hole groups, I want a lot of hits.  Glocks are ultra reliable and I find mine easy to shoot.  Is it highly accurate?  No.  It is the least accurate pistol I own.  It is also the one I would want if I were in a jam.

ccoker, how could we possibly know, each gun is different. If you take a dozen guns of the same brand and model, there will probably be 1 or 2 that are more accurate. Then you try different ammo and find a preference that your gun may have. Sights you can see help. Barrels, and triggers come into play. Your just going to need to shoot your gun to find out. I expect "Minute of Car Door" out of my Glocks at 50 yds.

Some of my best auto pistol groups ever were shot with my old G-20. If I did my part I could get under three inch groups at 25 yards. Blazer 200 grain fmj's were the ammo IIRC.

I even got three inch groups or less with my KKM .40s&w conversion barrel, which blew away a G-35 I had at the time.

I didn't get the great accuracy until I installed Heinie sights on it.

I traded it away after I had trouble with the then new full capacity magazines.

I'll second that.  Although a little tighter groups would be nice.  Since we don't get to just go out and try the guns out on people, I think we can get a good idea of how most people are going to react when getting shot at by paintballs.  Most people scream the second they start to get lit up.

Everyone talks about bullet placement, but I have a feeling that it doesn't much matter where you put the 15 holes in a person.  In fact, just putting 15 bullets in the vicinity of most people will probably stop them.

Unless they are buzzed up on crystal meth, or crack, or in a full rage.  I guess I would want to make sure that I was as close as I could get, and with someone attacking I bet I won't be able to focus and calmly aim.  I practice at center body mass, and getting the most rounds on the target.  And I hope I never have to know if I am good enough or not.

I guess it depends on what you want it for. For self-defense its as good as it gets. With a little practice you can keep it inside the 8 ring on a man size target at 50 yds and in the 9 ring at 25 yds. If you want to hunt with it, a few years back they were making a 6 inch barrel for that added in fps and accuracy. With that barrel I had a buddy scoring neck shots on whitetails in the East Texas Pineywoods at 25 yds.
The Glock is made for self-defense, but you can certainly hunt with it.

My model 20 Gen 1 will put 5 rounds in 1 1/2" @ 25 yards. I purchased it used a few months ago. Ammo is Georgia Arms. My Kimber SS Target II in 10mm will only shoot 2 1/2" @ 25 yards. My Glock is stock.

Both of your pistols are exceptional. The Glock performance is exceptionally good, the Kimber is exceptionally poor!!  What ever you do, don't tinker with the Glock!!! There is something most likely amiss with the Kimber.

The ability to be accurate depends on you, and the amount of time you want to invest in your Glock.  After obtaining my first Glock years ago, I had left all other makes and platforms to dedicate myself to nothing but Glocks.

Did someone dig up an old thread or are we going to get a range report now that a year is up?

I almost answered the same question twice, it's good to see I agree with myself from a year ago.

saw an article once that said in police shootings 1 in 7 shots hit the target . nerves , low light , lack of pratice , etc. cause the misses . At 25 yards i can keep all shots from a 20 in a paper plate while standing and aiming , with a rest maybe 3-4 inch group , if some one is shooting back all bets are off .
BTW I like a 870 more than the 20 for just such reasons !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If you just want to see how you do , then get some friends together and try this - place a 3X5 index card on a target backer at eye level. set it at 7 yards . Each shooter place 5- 5dollar bills on a table in a pile call it the bank . Each shooter then takes 5 shots each one separately timed , OH yea , start with weapon in holster and draw and fire at  comand , ( you will need a timer ) you must make the shot in less than 1.5 seconds . If you go over the time or miss the card then add another 5 , if you do good then you get your money back . I can do it most times with my Glock IF I PRATICE ALOT - ALOT !
Its not a gun fight for sure but it gives pressure in that you can loose some cash and others are watching . If ya get good then place a sheet of note book paper at 15 yards and double tap it from a draw in 2 seconds .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

There is no shooting game that will truly prepare anyone for a gunfight.  The only thing that helps is to shoot lots.  In Viet Nam at the end of firefights it was common for people to find that they hadn't fired a shot even when they thought they were.  And archeology at civil war battlefield sites found rifles with many charges in them, and apparently no cap ever put on.  Cool, logical thinking and fine motor skills are out the window.  The best we can hope for is that we get the gun aimed somewhere near center body mass and the hit does enough damage to stop the situation.

KIETH That is true enough but only shooting paper with out any stress will not help as much as some of the courses of fire that have a shooter draw , move and see different targets . The first time i shot humoid targets i hesitated as they look like real people . Things like that and what you mentioned are best worked out in advance as much as possible . card board targets with shirts on them change the look enough to let a shooter see where he hits when a bullseye is not the target .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Just to add some hunting talk to this post:

Large Mountain Lion Killed with G20

And for those interested, yes they still make a 6" hunting barrel for the G20
