refletching carbon shafts
« on: May 15, 2008, 05:16:46 AM »
Anybody got any easy way to refletch carbon shafts - that is getting the old/damaged fletching off. I have been cutting the vane and then scraping the shaft. I'm afraid to use acetone like I could on my aluminum shafts.

I am far from being a pro, but what I do is cut the old fletch off with a razor blade (i don't have the proper tool), scrape the old glue off(like you said you do) if i cant get all the glue off I use a super fine sand paper and try to sand it off then clean with acetone and glue the new one on.  I have never had any problems yet.

I use a razor knife...The kind that you break off the tip on..I cut the vane's off with the sharp side..Then scrape the glue off with the dull side. The corner edge's do a great job without as much danger of gouging the shaft..then wipe them down with some acetone..I do it every time and I have arrow's that are 8 years old..Works like a dream. I scrape them off with a knife then ruff the shaft up a little with fine sandpaper
then wipe down with rubbing alcohol, I usually use just plain old superglue to
attach the fletch, never had one fall off.

the first thing i do when i buy arrows is refletch them.  i use my pocketknife, which i always keep sharp.  for scraping off the glue i use more strokes with less pressure.  then i clean the shafts with acetone.  it doesn't seem to hurt the shafts at all, and i have done some several times.  i use fletch tite platinum from boehning archery.  i have never had one fall off, but i have shot a few off whle practicing.  i like the sandpaper idea, i might have to use that.

Most good archery stores stock a handy little tool called a feather stripper , works with vanes as well . Its a angled piece with a replaceable blade that slips along the shaft with zero chance of damaging it as with a knife . I know it adds expence but when you refletch carbon arrows use arrow wraps , saves a lot of hassle . I also use fletching tape , greatest invention ever in archery in my veiw . I have no problems with the fletch coming adrift on my carbons and the shaft stays clean and glue free . I switched to tape as I also use crested wood arrows and refletching them was a chore as it involved refinishing the shaft , with tape , no drip , no mess a bit fiddly but still quicker than glue .
