info on TRACKER MODEL 970 .22 LR REVOLVER
« on: August 29, 2008, 09:27:10 AM »
What are everyones' opinions on the TRACKER MODEL 970 .22 LR REVOLVER.
I'm looking for a 22 single/da but really can't justify a SW at twice the price
Is the Taurus junk or an acceptable piece. I will be doing plinking, some paper and some hunting

Thanks

Hello montveil, I asked this question in the TAURUS forum a few days ago. I have been looking at one for some time now but was hesitant in buying it because of the unknown. While looking I handled all kinds of Taurus revolvers and most of them felt like they didn't lock up tight enough. The cylinder would rotate slightly.I don't know if it moved enough to cause a problem but it feels like enough to cause accuracy issues. These are great looking guns and I know a few people that have 357 and 44 calibers. They tell me they shoot as accurate as they feel they can hold the gun.
I feel your pain for the price of a Smith but I am going to find someone that owns a 970 in a 22 LR and see if they will let me shoot it before deciding which to buy.
Either way let me know if you find any other info.I'm searching for the same answers.

I looked at the Tracker in both .22 and .357.  The .22 seemed like overkill with the long barrel and vented rib in a small caliber.  I already have a Ruger MkIII so I have the long-barrel .22 category covered.  What I was looking for was a DA revolver in .22 so that I could shoot a lot and improve my skills without breaking the bank.  I settled on a Taurus 94, 4".  It looks like a decent gun, at $300 less than a S&W.

Unless you have your heart absolutely set on DA revolver, the MKIII cannot be beat for plinking, targets, and hunting.  The Hunter version comes with a scope mount and is already drilled and tapped for it.  They even include the screws.  At a local pin shoot, a woman shooting a MkIII walks away with it about 80-90% of the time.  If you could settle for a SA, the Ruger Single Six is an outstanding gun, and it comes with an extra cylinder for .22 mag which makes it an extremely versatile gun, and still less than the S&W.

i've had a late model taurus 22lr 9 shot revolver, not sure what model.  i think it had a 5 inch barrel.  it shot fine, the only problem was the trigger pull in double action was pretty stiff.  something could probably be done for that.  compared to my s&w 617, the taurus was a lot more compact, had better capacity, but the action was definitely not as good as the smith.  i think they are a very good deal.

I just put a Taurus similar to the last posters on layaway at the pawn shop.  It is smaller than a K frame Smith, has a four inch barrel, a nine shot cylinder, and pretty good adjustable sights.  I don't like the grips, and the trigger pull(DA) is pretty heasvy, but I think i can fix that.  Can't remember what model it is, but it will soon get the toture test, qualifying ten to twenty ccw students per week.  I hope it is as durable as everybody says.

I have a Tracker 970 and I like it a lot.  I have a friend whos SO keeps a Taurus .22 in the kitchen, whenever she sees a varmet in the yard she shoots it then when he gets home he has to get rid of it.  They have had this gun for years and have never had a problem.  That (and the price) are the main reasons I chose the Taurus.

It is a heavy revolver, which matches (or almost) the weight of my S&W 629 .44MAG.  Great for practice and just a fun gun to shoot.

I have a friend who shoots a Ruger Mark II a lot, he loves my Taurus Tracker and borrowed it a while back; I was beginning to wonder if I would get it back.

Lots of folks badmouth Taurus, I have 2 and have never had an issue with either of them.  I guess I am lucky!
