1:9" Hornet Barrels

Not to high jack the thread but why did they go to a 1 in 9 in the first place?

I don't shoot any 22cal bullets heavier than 55gr and prefer to stay 53 or below.

Don't know many 1 in 9s that will shot the lighter bullets.

Likely to reduce production costs, one less barrel to make, all 223 barrels are 1:9". There have been plenty of reports here that 1:9" twist barrels shoot the same lighter bullets just as well as the 1:12" barrels did, try a search on the subject.  ;)

I prefer the lighter bullets in my .224 barrels too. While I think that over stabilization reduces bullet accuracy, modern bullets are very good in construction so it does not make a lot of difference if they are over stabilized. Given a choice, I prefer 1-14" twists, because I like to shoot 50 grain bullets and under. In a 22 Hornet, I do not think that you can reach speeds fast enough to blow a lightly constructed bullet up either. It may aid in bullet blow up.

So the .223" and .224" barrels are made from the same tooling?

Same thing Lazermule. they don't make a .223 and .224 barrel,  The .223 and the .22 hornet use the same barrel blank to start with.

Well, I guess the good news in that, would be for the experimentor that would like to try a 22cal "whisper" round - say a 70 gr subsonic smallbore anyone?

That subsonic sounds interesting just not sure what I would use it for .Kind of pricey to punch tree rats with a 70gr bullet ;D Kurt
