This American Cyclopedia article describes the art of casting cannons in more detail than you usually find, including descriptions of the gun box, etc. For some reason there isn't much about that in the modern books on antique artillery.

A bit difficult to follow the old English as written, but interesting description of how they used to cast cannon! Lots of manual labor involved then, as compared to the machinery of today! BoomLover
