shooting 44 Mag in 444 Marlin
« on: January 10, 2009, 08:25:03 AM »
Hi Guys,

Been away for awhile and good to be back.

Question, I have a 44 Mag Contender Super 14 that someone at sometime has had bored out to a 444 Marlin.

My question is, can I still shoot 44 Mag in this gun.  Thank in advance.

It may not work, it depends on your chamber. I forget the exact reason, something to do with the bases and rims being too different between the two cartridges, but the fellas over at the Marlin forum know better:

Only the first inch of a 444 is the same size as a 44. It rattles around a lot in the 444 chamber but closes ok. I did not fire one.
After firing in a 444, your 44 brass would not chamber in a 44 again and may not fit back in a 44 sizing die. Full 44 loads may not survive for long.  I would just load reduced loads in the 444 for practice, as accuracy would not be good in the long chamber with the 44s, similar to a 45 in the 410.
