I know Duke did wrong, but I'd still like to see him pardoned.

Let him make restitution and a public apology and then let him out, under house arrest. Ankle bracelet for 5 years. :-[

Cunningham not only took bribes, he demanded bribes.  IMO:  He should rot in jail.

There are hero's that do not abuse power, unfortunately he abused it, and needs to pay the price.  Just think of those who may have suffered because of the misspent defense department funding from congress.

Normally I would say"let him pay his due", but more and more lately I am beginning to see that many high placed politicians are in there primarily to "get theirs..and get out"!
Is what Duke did any worse than what a couple presidents in recent years did..One, cut our military budgets to the bone, cut drastically, the size of the Navy, try to sell a closed Navy base in So Cal..to the Chinese..and clear the way for certain crooked corporations to sell our ICBM guidance systems to the Chinese?
The other also cut our military budgets so slim that even the spec ops units could not afford to have proper training and helicopters so poorly maintained that an entire force sent to rescue our embassy hostages..was wiped out..
Remember; one of these two brilliantly sent spec ops into Mogadishu at NOONDAY (when we "own" the night)..and had no backup of rescue armor  or contingency planning..should things go bad...and they did! Remember Blackhawk Down.
Frankly, I think there are a lot more politicians that have done as bad and have not even been "brought on the carpet" for it! So I say, if you can't treat all the political crooks alike..why jump on one's frailties?

We had John Kerry come back from Vietnam and accuse our troops of committing atrocities..even saying he did so too..so why isn't he in jail?

We had Jophn Murtha accusing our Marines of being "cold blooded killers"..the Marines he accused were exonerated..so why isn't he in jail?
    Fair for one...fair for all!

I get mad every time i read about our troops "killing civilians" THEY ARE ALL CIVILIANS" they dont wear uniforms ,or march in ranks ,operate as a unit holding a front, if they were our troops would be home in a week. Is that truck load of guys going to a tailgate party at a soccor game or to set up an ambush in a pass,?
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

Ironglow, the difference is that those guys you listed are Democrats.  They play by different rules.  If Cunningham wants out of the slammer, he's going to have to change parties.

Magooch;
Sure looks that way! Let's see what happens to Blagojevich and the crook in New Orleans (Wm Jefferson) that had hundreds of thousands "on ice"..
or the mayor of New Orleans that let folks drown while thousands of school buses sat idle, or Gov Blanco, who refused federal help in the early stages of Katrina.
In view of so many crooks walking (e.g. Chicago's Rostenkoski), the Duke and the border patrolmen should be pardoned. Sorry W, I have no pity for drug smugglers..especially those that continue in the trade while better men rot in jail!

I have a different take.
I feel as though many are guilty and get away with the ride.
Not all BG's get caught, those that are caught should pay the reaper.
I like the man and do consider him a hero, well a fallen hero, nothing can take away VN or other exploits. In the same vein, nothing can take away the blemishes, either.
Sad, very sad but greed is that way.
Blessings

Here's my take; he was a great American Hero. A true flying Ace. He deserves credit for that! I for one salute you Duke!!!!   However,  He betrayed the trust of those that put him in office. Arrogance is the problem here I think. For that We should all condemn him. As far as spending time in jail, what a waste of talent. But what a waste of our trust!

Yep, Cunningham is a hero.  For some reason the US Navy never saw fit to promote their #1 hero to Captain.  Maybe the Navy brass saw something in his character the rest of us did not.

Cunningham made himself rich in the US congress.  No one set Cunningham up.  One of his aides confronted Cunningham with his corruption and asked him to resign:  Cunningham refused and the aide resigned.  Cunningham demanded bribes from defense contractors.
