Closet NEF fan
« on: December 22, 2008, 09:02:58 PM »
I am so happy I found this forum I have spent a lot of time reading the posts and you all seem like decent people that know these rifles inside and out. By the way I had no idea the amount of stocks that are available for these guns.  I currently have a NEF in .243, had it for about 4 years, I love this gun it has expired many coyote and has shot well out of the box with just your basic gun care. I have taken a lot of flak from my Ruger shooting buddy, but have to say you cannot beet them for the price or even double the price. Well I am ready to take my shooting to the next level, and also direct my attention to bobcats.  I am currently going through all the FAQ about accurizing my gun but have a question.  I am looking to get a .22 Hornet, I notice on the H&R website that they have it in a 20" barrel if I do the barrel program. After reading the posts I am thinking I will probably just pick up a whole rifle but can't  seem to find it with a 20" inch barrel does anyone know if you can purchase the whole rifle in a 20"?  I just purchased everything to start reloading so if you have some suggestion for fur friendly .243 for long range coyote or .22 hornet loads for bobs within 100 yds. let me know.  I can already see myself becoming a Handi junkie.

I really can't help you with your questions, but Tim should be along soon to help you.  In the meantime, welcome and Merry Christmas.

My super light .22 Hornet is a 20" barrel. Pretty accurate with Win 45g HP.

I'm going to start handloading for it to save money. I've got a box of 40gr V-max I want to try for prairie dog shooting.

IMHO, a standard contour barrel would be way too heavy for the type of "walking gun" that I use that cartridge for.

Welcome!! The SB2-SL4 and SB2-SY4 22 Hornet Superlights were scheduled to be canceled for 2008 along with the standard Hornet, but they apparently changed their mind after our protests, the regular Hornet is still available, but I dunno on the SL, I found none in stock at my usual places. The SY4 an SL4 barrels are still listed on the accessory barrel list, best thing to do is call and ask if they have any, or look for a complete rifle. One place to call is Whittaker's, they list it, but don't indicate it's in stock. If you can find the SY4 youth rifle, you can swap stocks.

Well I can't seem to find a complete 20" rifle, i am going to rummage around the local dealers and pawn shops a little more. I did call H&R they do still have some 20" inch barrels so if I have to I will mail it in and have one fitted I figure that way I can also pick me up a .308 barrel also.  Does anyone know if there is any place I can still get the yellow and gray laminate stock seems like they are in short supply and I love the looks. Thanks for for all your help.

The Hornet stocks have pretty much dried up there were some left about a yr ago but the few used sets I've seen sold since then have been pricey.Kurt
