Looking for a smith to blue SS
« on: January 01, 2009, 03:46:14 PM »
As the title says I am looking for a smith that has the materials and ability to blue stainless steel rifled actions.  It can be done but ONLY a hot blue, no cold blue available for SS.

I want to compare this to other coatings.

The "problem" with hot salts bluing for stainless steel is that it will etch the bore, which can have adverse effects on the accuracy life of the barrel. I know this for a fact as I had one of my bench rest barrel blued with adverse effects. I would reccommend a diffrent type of barrel coating but thats just my personal opinion.

WOW!  OK that issue is resolved.  Sorry you had to learn the hard way, and thanks for helping me not to.

Kreiger barrels are expensive and I just wish that i had tried it out on another lesser grade of barrel first. The finish was beautiful but the results were far more expensive than the final results.

What other types of finishes are you looking at?

One of the spray coatings from Brownells would work.
