Making Balls

    I find myself intriged by something that Cannonmn mentioned in an earlier post. The technique he discussed was making cannonballs using styrofoam balls in sand. Well I have done some digging and have found this site it may be useful to those wishing to try this technique. Thanks for posting that, their prices are certainly good, a bag of 12 ea. 1.5 in. balls for under $2. plus shipping.

And a secondary use would be to make your own whiffle balls for cannons and mortars!

"Whiffle ball"!!  A number of years ago, I was asked by the Watervliet Arsenal to demonstrate my breechblock falcon for a tape to be shown in the museum visitor's center. I was with General Solomon, the Commanding Officer of the Army Ordnance Corp and the incoming and outgoing colonels of the arsenal.  I surmised that the safest place to discharge the cannon was at the nicely fenced-in manicured putting green of the commanding officer.

Did you know that a tennis ball sized styrofoam ball is made-up of a guhzillion pellets?

The green was blanketed.

I looked at the camera and said, "Guess I should have used a putter?".

They shop vac'd it after I left.
