"It's me again Margaret"... .223 or 22-250 ?
« on: December 31, 2008, 02:50:18 PM »
Hey folks, You may recall I yanked y'alls chain a few days ago about whether to buy an T/C barrel for my Encore, VS buying a handi rifle in .223..remember ? I had my mind all made up to order the Ultra varmint fluted in .223. I phoned my dealer, and after chatting a bit he has me thinking hard on getting the 22-250. Price is the same on either rifle. Since I dont reload I was thinking of the .223 and shooting all factory ammo, with choices out there for cheaper shooting. So....does anyone have any input about factory loads in .223 versus 22-250 out of the handi? Actually, my decision will primarily be based on ammo choices and prices thereof. I have found a couple places that have factory 22-250 loads for 11.00 per 20.

Can the .223 handi shoot cheap ammo good enough to hunt with? Reason I am asking is this; if I have to buy 15 to 20 dollar a box .223 ammo to responsibly hunt, I may as well buy a 22-250?

??? HELP! I am soooooooooooooooooo confused!

Big G.B.O. welcome to ya ikl, some may think different big here is my take, go with the 223, and get into reloading even if starting with the lee loader!! I have both the 223 & 22-250, and love the 22-250, but truth be told the 223 will serve you well. The 22-250 is great, and has served me well past the 250 mark, but the 223 is not to be over looked! it it is cheap to load for, and a good reason to get into reloading for.

I'll throw another monkey wrench in the works.

If you learn to reload you could also learn to cast bullets. The .223 will shoot cast bullets loaded down to .22 Hornet levels which equals REALLY CHEAP. I think the case capacity of the .22-250 wold be a little much for loading down with the same level of efficiency the .223 has.
I think the real question would be, do you need the upper level of performance that the .22-250 offers over the .223?

Personally I was kind of amazed to read in an Outdoor life magazine at the doctor's office a year or so ago that when Remington first introduced the .22-250 they touted it as a rifle suitable for deer. I know people who shoot deer with a .22 Hornet so that wasn't all that big a shock but seeing it advertised that way to the general public seemed a bit strange.

by the way, I like Ray Stevens too. :)

I picked the .22-250 for my antelope hunt, because it would put a heavier bullet further down range than my .223.  My .223 is a 1 in 12 and doesn't shoot bullets over 60 grains very accurately.  It will shoot minute of PD @ 350 yards with Winchester 55 grain ballistic tips, but they're not cheap...
Current prices for .22-250 in my area are about 15 - 20% more than .223 from same manufacturer, last time I was looking.
My two cents - if you're after something larger than a coyote, farther than 250 yards, pick the .22-250.

I would start reloading. Can get started for around $100, and saves you a lot of $$$. Plus better accuracy.

The two are very different.  If hunting is the main thing you will do and it is not PD's, then the 22-250 will get it done.  I've had both, for a day at the range or in a PD town then the .223 is it, for anything else just get a 22-250.  Larry

I'll take the 223 anyday. Most people like to think about the ability for those long shoots that make having the 22-250 worthwhile. Most of the time that's as far as it ever gets...  ::) ::) The thought I mean!! If you truly need the extra horsepower for shote beyond the 300 mark go for the 22-250. Otherwise, the 223 will do EVERYTHING you need!!

I don't know where your looking for your prices. You must be compairing premium 223 to reg run of the mill 22-250 ON SALE. Cause round here the 223 is about 15-20% cheaper almost across the board.

I agree with those that suggested you get into reloading. Its a wonderful hobby and will extend your enjoyment with your shooting many times over.

Good luck and Happy New Year!!!

Not noted by anyone else, yet.  Be aware that H&R recommends that you DO NOT shoot the cheap Mil Surp ammo in the Handi.

 EXCELLENT POINT CCM!!
Also the 5.56 is NOT a 223 by handi standards. Its out of bounds as well. (Same as what CCM just said, only a diff name.  ::) ;D )

I shoot and reload both. In my opinion 22-250 for hunting and 223 for paper punching. Just compare the powder capacity of both and remember they shoot the same .224 bullets. The extra powder will drive the bullets faster, farther and with more energy. As I said, just my opinion...

I also vote for the .223. Besides being cheaper to shoot and load for ,ammunition and components are readily available just about everywhere.

Looking south from my back deck I can see across fields a mile and half.  I chose the .22-250.  As I have said before, if you're buying factory ammo, the cost for quality stuff isn't that much different.  I have the .22-250, but the .223 is still on my shopping list.

I agree with watsisname. Go with the 22-250. I am not a big fan of the 223. I have owned several and could never see what they would do that i couldn't do with my 222. Do yourself a favor and go with the 22-250.

IMNHO If you hunt anything bigger then varmints I would suggest going to 6mm something.
