Is Anyone doing any trapping in Florida?
« on: January 07, 2009, 04:41:52 AM »

I live in central Fla. and was wondering if anyone else might be trapping in this area? About all we have is coons and yotes. Personally I'd think the yotes would be easier to set up and shoot, but my son thinks he can trap them.

  Thanks,
     Rusty <><

Rusty,I think florida has some major regulations on what can be used .I think footholds may be out and all you can use is snares or bodygrippers.I am not sure so please check. Also let us know what you find,I like to have an idea as to what different states can use.

Hi guys, this is RustyJr. I think Ive seen biologists using box traps made out of a 55 gallon drum for wolves I was wondering if the same would work for coyotes. Another thing is I work at Tractor Supply and we sell a Hav-a-hart trap that is made for coyotes. It is probably 4 to 5 feet in length and probably 2feet wide by 3 feet tall. They also have a small bax inside for live bait. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these.

                   Thanks,
                         RustyJr

Rusty, very few canines are caught in cage traps. Not saying it can't be done--just saying --good luck.
Coyotes are not an easy thing--to entice into a cage.

    Thanks,

Leg hold traps of any kind are strictly verboten here. The regulations say you can use firearms, livetraps or snares to take fur bearing animals.
You can not even posses leg hold traps where game might be found unless authorized by a permit from the director of the FWC.

It seems strange that they would allow a snare and not a leg hold trap.

They also say traps must be checked every 24 hours.

Snares are a very effective tool, when it comes to taking yotes.

Check your regs closely, a bodygripper(conibear type) kills the animal.

Rusty my advise is read or ask your states regulations so you understand them...... them my advise is to learn how to use snares.... with snares you can catch animals alive or dead depending on how and where you set them.  So if you do have alot of pets in area  and you set accordingly you can release pets.... there are  pros and cons in everything you  use so weigh them carefully and  read and ask alot of questions BUT dont believe all you hear .   You can learn alot from books and videos  plus i would contact your states trapping association and see if you can get a mentor to help you.... this will  shorten your learning stage alot when learning what works and what doesnt..... as in some areas of the country (USA)  things that will work there wont work by you... Good luck.

IMO, yes it would.  From what I can tell they are prohibited.
