advice on ring height for my new handi
« on: January 03, 2009, 04:04:06 PM »
the wife bought me a new 223 heavy barrel for christmas and i threw a fixed 4 power sope on it with a set of low rings and it just barely clears the hammer. i just ordered a new 4x12x40 bushnell any advice on what height rings im gonna need to keep it off the hammer? my other 2 handis (44mag and 45-70) both wear red dots for closeup work in the brush so i dont have to worry about hammer clearance on them.

Newdad,
I have the same scope on a couple of my Handi's. I use medium height rings
and haven't had a problem. I use a offset hammer spur. If I get any clearence
problems a little Dremel work takes care of things. ;) I highly recommend a
set of Burris Sig Zee rings with the inserts. I have them on my 223 bull barrel.
I had some other rings that gave me nothing but trouble. Then I switched
to the Burris Sig Zee's and have never had a problem since they run less
than $30 a pair.

The Banner 4X12X40mm is OK, but I much prefer the Mueller APV to it.
Much better optics, easier magnification adjustment, more consistent
point of impact when you change magnification, higher magnification
(14X vs 12X), also includes a free sunshade. They run about $15-
$20 more than the Bushnell, but are a much better scope for the money
IMHO.

The Bushnell's tend to have oversized power rings.. especially the Trophy line. For this reason i never suggest them. Although they are an excellent lower cost scope.

Your 4X could be OK mounted lo, I have mostly Leupold scopes and am able to use LO rings in either Leupold PRW, or WARNE Maxi-ma rings and Weaver 4X4's. If you find minor clearance issues, Like SMBob suggested the dremel will easily fix them.

For a lower cost option, Weaver 4X4 rings work well. (They have gone VERY cheap and quality has suffered)

Here is an extention ring, again in the 4X4 model.

Also the FAQ's have an excellent section "RINGS" where many more pics of different scope and ring combos are shown. Hope this shows you what your looking for..
