Gun Racks for ATV's

Looking for some ideas for carrying a rifle on an ATV.  I have looked at some models at Bass Pro and they look a little fragile.  Does anyone have any homemade ideas?

I carry my rifles on my person with a sling or carry strap and usually on my back wrapped up to avoid damage.  I also prefer carbines or handguns because of this.  The forks that mount to existing racks that allow for the transport of a rifle are good for carrying rakes and shovels and the like but when I have a grand or 2 invested I'm not willing to put it out there to help me bust brush.  The latest gun boots do a fair job but tend to collect moisture when used where I go.

I'll put in the Kolpin Gun Boot mounted on the side. Nice, hard plastic case, and easy to get in-out. NEver have to worry about catching your barrel on trees and such and ripping you off and destroying the rifle/stock as a good hunting buddy did a few years ago. THey are readily avaiable, and resonably priced.

I used to carry my rifle slung over my shoulder until I got tired of the ATV flinging mud on it.  I vote for the hard plastic gun boots likeKolpin makes.  however, now that I drive a side by side,  purchased a well made padded soft rifle scabbard from Cabelas that I attach to the roll cage.   It is designed to protect a scoped rifle and attach to a horses saddle.   These past 2 seasons of use, it has proven to be a good choice.   Sorry i don't have a pic handy of it..

I've got the rubber covered gun "forks" on the front rack with heavy rubber "keepers" that go over the top. They're secure, but don't give a very quick access to the guns. I also use a Koplin "gun boot" without the "end cap" attached when hunting, which is a "rig" that gives you quick access to your rifle. I use an extra "bungee" cord as a "safety strape" to insure the gun boot doesn't "bounce" loose in rough terrain.

i made a nice metal one by bending some 1" by 1\4" strap and then welding some U shaped pieces of 3/8 rod to each end and bolting to my front rack on my polaris.i put some pieces of rubber fuel line over the rod for the gun to rest in and used a bungee to hold gun down . dont really need the bungee unless yu in pretty ruff terrain.cost me bout a nickle.if yu are totally into makin yur own stuff i could send a pic soon as i get time to take one.

I have a pair of the simple "U" shaped ones on the front and a pair on the side.
I like my ones mounted on the side but  often the gun is not long enough to reach them both , in that case I like the gun strapped across my chest. It is easier to watch the muzzle and protect that way, try it.

I have a plastic milk crate mounted on the front of my atv, with a Koplin gun boot strapped to it going side ways.  Muzzle to the left and stock to the right mounted at a 45 degree angle.  Stock is only a couple of inched from my right hand.  On long rides or in bad weather I use the part that covers the stock, but most of the time I just use it like a scabard with just the stock sticking out. Handy, ready and out of the way....

Anyone tryed one of the roof mounts in their UTV.  I have a Ranger that I put the soft cases looped over stakes in the bed behind the cab, but they get pretty dusty there or wet if it's raining.  Mounting on the floor sticking up in the middle of the floorboard is going to be in the way for the E-brake.  DP

I have a small tool box bolted to my back rack on my polaris sportsman 300
beside that to my back-right i have 2 pieces of 12"  [_]  shape 8" on sides and 4" across bottom  bolted down about 10" in front of each other and i set my rifle's hard plastic case in them and cross a strap across them

it hangs about 1 foot off the back and stops just short of being in my turn radius for my handle bars

not ready for a quick get and shoot style.. but this is how i transport it to and from my stand or blind...

I have a Polaris Ranger, a friend and I welded a couple of pieces of pipe between the overhead part of the roll cage (alittle cutting and painting and it looks like it was made there), I added one of the overhead gun racks for a pickup to it and it looks and works great.  It's out of the weather under the top and secures the guns well, only problem is the dust really gets up there when I have the windshield in.

Only one I've ever owned was the hard Koplin case.  Took it off because it made the best airline proof case I could find.  Only takes one lock and really supports a scoped rifle.

I carry my rifle on my back when riding.  That way I know it has not been hit by anything that might knock the scope off.  That was a permanent decision.  No more racks.
