New Ruger SR9 evaluation.
« on: January 06, 2009, 08:03:59 AM »
I bought a new Ruger SR9 semi-auto pistol last week.  Has an adjustable back strap, but will leave it the way it came from the factory.  Has a nice feel to it, adjustable low profile sites, took it to the range yesterday.  Thought I would compare it to it's forerunner the Ruger P-89 which I also own.

The SR9 has a longer let off on the trigger before release, typical for a striker fired gun, not as nice for precision target shooting compared to the P-89.  SR9 is thinner in width, also it holds 17 rounds in the clip.  The SR9 has superior sites, and comes to combat position better, it also improved in accuracy as it got broken and I got used to the long let off of the trigger release.  I shot Sellier and Bellot 115 grain bullets through it, there were no jams at all, pretty typical of Rugers new out of the box.

Heck of a deal at $429.00 new.  I think it is equal to or better than many of the higher priced guns like the Glock.  Since it is a new design we will have to see over the years if it will hold up to heavy use, but then again it is a Ruger and they are built heavy duty.  I traded my CZ-75 in .40 S/W for it, I much prefer the 9X19 cartridge as it is milder on the gun, my hand, my wallet, and the 9 MM will do the job.

You traded a CZ for a Ruger ?? Wow! Gotta tell ya, I have never heard anyone use P-89 and precision target in the same post before!
Having handled and shot the SR9, I'll agree that it's an improvement over the P-89 and P-95. Having owned both of the later, they were rugged, reliable pistols. Hopefully the SR9 will perform as well. Good Shooting!

Savage...you have a point.  The CZ's are really nice guns, I have another CZ-75 in 9X19, my best centerfire pistol, and 2 of their rifles.  I learned to shoot with some crude blackpowder muzzleloaders, bolt action surplus, and cheap BB guns.  So, heavy triggers are something that I am used to.  I have a Timney trigger on my Ruger 77/17, and have adjusted triggers on others, which really helps when doing precision bench shooting.  But, for overall casual shooting a trigger with a long let off and 6 lb setting is something that does not bother me too much.

I am wondering if ol' Bill Ruger had anything to do with the design of the SR9 as he has been dead for a few years now?

Chris,
Doubt Bill would have put his stamp on a striker fired pistol. Ruger is starting to get with the times lately with the new LCP and SR9. I'm glad to see it.
