.35 cal + Bolt action + higher velocity + bigger game = .35 Whelen
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

If you want a bolt action in 35 rem, might as well go for a 358 winchester, can use the standard 30-06/308 bolt face without modification...  Love both 35 rem 358 win...  As for 35 vs 30-30....Bob Milek killed lots of big critters with the 35 rem out of contenders and XPs... and he worked with the herrett as a varmit round...

No one has any business shooting at game at 300 yards with either caliber with any load.
The 30-30 has always been at it's best with 170 bullets and the .35 at it's best with 200 grainers.
Frankly most Marlin .35's won't shoot 150 grain bullets for crap.
Under 150 yards both rifles have a well deserved reputation for taking whitetail deer.
I have both.
I prefer the .35 because of the slightly larger diameter and heavier bullet.
I doubt any deer has ever noticed a difference.
I thhink most people hunting at woods ranges would be better served with the 30-30/170 combination;adequate power, adequate range, little recoil for the 30-30.

Having taken more than 20 deer with various 30-30 rifles I think the 150 grain bullet is better on deer, that said compared to many other cartridges the 30-30 is not all that impressive.
