Tubes or Senkos
« on: July 20, 2003, 09:47:24 AM »
Ok guys,
Time to start a new thread. What do you use more often, tubes or stick baits? I would have to say that I am 60/40 with the tubes getting the nudge. Fish a lot of smallie waters and can't seem to stop hitting them with tubes.............John

Seldom are the 2 interchangable in a given fishing situation.  Senko's are basically top water or suspended fish baits while tubes are mostly bottom fished.  There are times of the year that I hardly pull a tube out, then there are times when I'd probably not pull out a tube.  Early spring and summer are prime tube time.  Mid spring and spawn are senko time.

I personally haven't had any luck using a senko as a jerkbait. I either texas rig it or throw it without a weight and deadstick it. That is why I brought up the question is I find them to be very much compatiable...

I'm using senko's split shot rigged about a 15" leader I cast it out and twitch it as it falls while reeling it in at the same time.  I'm doing this on rocky points and it drives the bass crazy.  Sometimes i have the split shot out of the water ready to take the senko out and they strike it awesome. My only problem is me I'm just too slow at setting the hook I caught only two today and missed like 5 strikes besides.  Plus their too expensive and too soft one fish per worm but their catching fish for me right now.  As long as I use the rod tip to twitch it!!!!!               BigBill

Red senko's 5" have caught my two biggest fish this year so far.

With a Senko or a Fluke either one, you  have to let the fish take it, you don't set the hook like you do with a Texas rigged worm.  I find it best to let the fish take it and turn his head away from you if it will, then set the hook.

Your right maybe I'm too quick I'll try tomorrow waiting longer.  I missed so many fish but i did catch two and yes i know thats bad numbers too.  I was averaging 7 to 9 bass per trip I'll have to be more patient.  This year has been tough too.                                                BigBill

Skipper your right!!! Funny I switched to using BassProShops "stick o worms"  Their as good as senko's and you get 20 and its $2 cheaper plus their YUM impregnated too besides.  Now my story is I was using senko's all week and missed fish eveyday.  I switched to stick o worms and got a hit and missed so i stopped moving it to talk to my buddie when a 3 1/2lb largemouth picked it up and almost took the rod out of my hands I never expected it. After landing her and releasing her I still had the stick o worm I casted it out at the same spot and nailed a large pickerel and i still had the stick o worm so after releasing him I casted out again and caught my third fish on the same worm another pickerel and still had the stick o worm left to use again!!!!!  I came home yesterday morning and placed another order for more Stick O Worms and lastnite I placed another order for more because I feel I didn't order enough of them with the fall frenzy coming I'll be too busy fishing/ resting to do anything else. So now I just cast it out and let it sit too besides twitching it or just letting it fall too.  Skipper is right so many different presentations with the same bait.  Nothing is catching fish right now I'm using cranks, spinnerbaits, inline spinners, topwater stuff and spoons and nothing is working but bottom fishing plastics at this moment the week before cranks were working either twitching them or dead sticking them off the bottom.  After a few days of nothing the 3 1/2lber felt good.   Its been so tough here I feel good just to get a hit and miss!!!!!!                       BigBill
