Info on Simmons 44 mag
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:40:39 PM »
I recently bought a Handi in 45-70 with a Simmons 44 mag 3x10x44 on it.  Can someone give me the low down on this glass?? I am not a simmons fan but this seems to be a decent scope.  I cant find much info on it as I think it has been discontinued.  Is it fully coated, multi coated??  I know I perrsonally dont think it has alot in the field of view department as you can look at something the size of a deer at around 75 yds at 6 power and the scope is full of what you are looking at.  I am considering selling it for a Bushnell Banner as I have several of these and just love them.  Any info will be appreciated.

I do one of two things with them. I either toss them in the trash or save them to put on rifles I am trading off. It seems gun stores around here really do not care what kinda scope a gun has so long as it has one on it when they take it on trade. I often buy them with Leupold scopes on them and then put a cheap POS like a Simmons on it and trade it back pretty much getting same or nearly same for it as it was priced to begin with getting the quality scope nearly free in the process.

WOW>  Not alot of love here for a Simmons..  :o

Oh well, at least the 45-70 was worth what I paid for it with or without the scope.

Simmons scopes are like an evil woman, they may be pretty to look at,but deep inside they are trash.I spent enough money sending them back to the factory for repair that if I'd taken that money spent on ammo and shipping,I could had bought me a really good scope.Spend the money now and buy something decent like Leupold,Bushnell Elite Series,Nikon,Sightron and check the warranties too before you buy.

Had 4 Simmons 44 Mag scopes. Only (1) has passed muster and it`s on a marlin 30-30.
For some unknown reason, this one is doing a good job.
The rest did not survive the test and have long sense joined their siblings in outer

What a consistent reputation! And, it seems they are for sale in mass quantities @ discount prices everywhere. Caveat Emptor! Seems to me that the nitch is not filled between Leupold and Simmons.

Had a few 6.5 to 20 power simmons 44 mags.  Never had a problem with any, but then I never had one mounted on an 45-70.... Ouch.  And ouch again.

I have a simmons whitetail hunter stuck away for when I need to get rid of a rifle.  I also have a BSA stuck away as well.  The simmons was stuck on a rifle I traded somebody for.  I'm sure thats why they kept it around.  More than likely, the person you got your rifle from did the same thing.  Scope swapping is very common.  If you don't then you end up losing money on a good scope that you are going to have to go out and replace.  I don't know how many times I have gone out to classifieds and seen $500 plus rifles with $50 scopes on them.  I bet if you go out to the classifieds here, you will see it also.
