convert my CZ 527 from .223 to 6.8 SPC
« on: January 06, 2009, 11:21:43 PM »
Who would you suggest do it, and a rough cost estimate?

I love my 527 and have killed deer with it, but I think the 6.8 SPC would make a dandy deer rifle out of it.
I also have no idea why Remington doesn't offer their model 7 in this cal, or CZ offer it as a factory option??

I'm interested too but the magizine would be the tricky part if you ask me.
The follower and the lips are set up for 223 and not the 30 Remington case that is the parent case to 6.8.
It may be easier to go with 7mm TCU or make a .270-223 or call it 6.8X45 round and use the parent 223 case with deer capable bullets.
The 7.62X39 version magizine may work but I am not sure.
I found it odd that when CZ had their poll about what calibers we would like to see in the 527 platform 6.8 was not mentioned leaning me to think that the Mag or the action would not work for one reason or another.  Go on thier website www.cz-usa.com and see if they still have the poll and two they have a custom rifle program that you can see if they will do the work or reccomend someone that can or if you can order a new rifle in that caliber under the custom rifle program.
I would love to see the 527 in 35 Remington as a brush rifle and as a youth deer gun. But looking at the over all lenghts of the 223 and the 7.62X39 I think 35 rem is a little too long.  I know take my own advice and see if they can do it.   :o Too many projects and wants ahead of a 35 rem right now.

I know I read an article on line, somewhere, where this conversion had been done.  A nice mule deer taken with that rifle in the article.

assuming you reload, it would be easy to go with a 7mm TCU.  I'm pretty sure it was based on the .223 case.  Also you could easily do a 6mm-.223.  Not sure how much you would gain by going up in weight and down in velocity though.  I think for the money, I'd just pick up another 527 in 7.62x39 unless you just have to have a 6.8.

7mm TCU may not work in the 527. The TCU case has a reduced body taper and nearly square shoulder. It could be a problem through an un-altered magazine.
A 7mmX.223 should work with just a barrel change or bore job.

After doing a little research, I think a 6mmx45, 6mmx223, may be a better option. Who would you get to do this kind of conversion?
I can use the same bullets that I do in my .243, and a single pass through the die will convert 223 brass. I will just keep my shots under 250 and I should be good to go.
