encore scout rifles?
« on: December 28, 2008, 10:44:06 AM »
Just wondering if any of you have done this and how it worked out for you. I'm considering a .243 with about an 18"-20" barrel and 4x forward mounted scope.  Should I go with a custom barrel or modify a factory one? Would love to see any pics if ya got em. Thanks.

My thoughts. I have a 243 and 308 both in 22" barrels. Also a 16 1/2 308 that would work in either carbine or pistol. They are short and easy to handle.
Scope wise I see more of a disadvantage to a scout scope than a regular mounted scope. I can find the scope field a lot easier with a standard scope with a big front objective than a scope mounted a foot from my face. A scope mounted pistol is even worse at arms length.

if it was me i would go with a nice 6.5x284 in a 18.5 inch braked  med heavy barrel with the weaver shotgun mount and get a burris short mag scope and put it out far as you can get it perfect little walking gun.. my 450 marlin is 18 and its a sweet carry gun with the nikon 2-7x32 prostaff on it

Sorry, I should've been much more clear. I tend to type fast sometimes. Ayway I had a handi rifle in .243 that I set up with a scout scope and I really liked that gun. Both me and my step son shot well with it out to 200 yards from field rests. It carried very nicely, and was quick to shoulder. I really liked the 4x scout scope that was on it.  Now, I also have an encore pistol in .308 that i swap out for a muzzleloader, I like that one a lot too. I'm set on the .243 caliber and the scout set up just to see how I like it in the encore. If it doesn't work out I'll get rid of it and go back to the handi.

All the factory barrels I've seen are tapped for a regular scope to be mounted. I've never seen a forward mount from the factory, so I'm assuming that my options are either putting another set of holes in a factory barrel, which I don;t really want to do and wonder if I can? Or look for a custom barrel.

Nobody has an encore scout rifle? or even a contender might interest me if it was the right caliber. I'm really curious to see pics of any that might be out there. Thanks.    jammer

The short mag idea might not be bad at all. Thanks for the idea.

If drilling new scope mount holes is doable, the right place to ask is Thompson Center's Customer Service Deptartment.  If it can be done, I would ship the barrel to them and have them do it.  They have been very reasonable on all work they have done for me and the workmanship is excellent!!!!!

You're right. I just figured someone here might know if this has been done before and if it was safe. I'm not drilling holes until I know for sure. I'll call them on monday. Thanks for the # 8)
