Going shooting today!
« on: January 08, 2009, 03:57:10 AM »
So the Seacaost guys and I are going shooting this morning out on the lone parrie .  8)

They are bringing their Brooke three banded rifle . I will get to shoot my new Dom made Parrot gun .

It seems to me w/ sights and these steel mill balls I should be able to hit a 4x4 target at 100yds even though it is not rifled.....yet ;D

Interesring end to your sentence; Have you convinced the boys to perform an operation on your new Parrott?
Are you patching the steel balls or firing them nekkid?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Well they have a lot of nerve.  They sent me to to Kalispell to take a picture of cannon for them.  About half way over the mountain just the other side of the Marias Pass as I am sliding sideways down the highway and hoping there is no guard rail in the snow bank my front was plowing flat, I decided to trun around come home.  I was so hoping to see Lois Lane.  ;D

So what cannon were you supposed to take a picture of? I drive through Kalispell twice a day, to and from work, and my wife is a photographer with the attendant digital camera.
I have kinda enjoyed the sideways thing the last couple of weeks...

Wow 9hrs of driving and shooting ! :D

I got home about 30 mins ago . There are pics coming as Tracy took a bunch .

Once the wind wound down it actualy was comfy in short sleeves . The Dom made Parrot "My little Tart " fires great .  We shot for hours and never saw another soul not another car down the road...nothin , very nice  ;D

BTW for the record a 4x4 target at 100 yds. is safe , at least w/ me aiming .

MikeR C, The Seacoast guys say there is a cannon in Woodland Park in Kalispell. I didn't even know there was a Woodland Park.

Back in November Mike and Tracy challenged us all to go out and look for cannons in our area and bring back pictures...here the original post.

As a matter of fact there is. It is setting on a repro naval carriage, right at the entrance to the park. I use to drive by it on my way to work. I had already decided to stop and take some pics, but I will probably wait till spring, unless there is a pressing need for pics sooner...
I would be happy to take pics, with close ups of any markings, once the snow melts off :)

Yeah snow, you can read my blow by blow account of my attempt to get throught  the snow to Kalispell over on the Hunting in Montana Forum here on GBO.

Just went out to the garage a few minutes ago and the thaw is over, we have a screaming blizzard going on!

We had a great time shooting Gary's "Tart" today.  It's a testament to his attention to safety that we started with 100 gr. loads and gradually worked up to a respectable 400 grs.  The golf balls were fun and the steel shot screamed across the prairie quite smartly.  This outing was designed for gaining familiarity with the cannon made by Dom Carpenter.  We had lots of fun, and everyone agreed that sabots would be on the agenda next time.  Lots of fun, despite a sand blowing wind for two of the four hours!

Regards,

Mike and Tracy

Gary's "Brass Monkey" which held the solid shot.

A ".22 cal. booster" was as reliable as a miniature blank shotgun shell which it was with 10 grs. BP.

Aiming carefully in 15 to 20 mph gusts; sand came from under the Suburban to hit you square in the face.

KA-BLAM !!!  Target at 60 yards to regulate sights.

The Cannon's owner grinning justifiably.  A little low, but it's on the paper and the very first one for this artillery piece.

We brought some 400 gr. charges along just in case;  they came in handy.

rocklockI holds a scorched dog toy novelty projectile, a GB sized tennis ball.  400 grs. DID NOT destroy it!

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,

You might do a test.

Set up a digital camera looking down the sights. Have front sight aligned with a down range target and the camera focused through the sight.  Load a just a primer, no powder charge. Turn the camera on and record.  Pull the slap hammer and fire the primer.  Do it several times.  Look at the video and I'll bet you see the barrel move.

You can also set sights for that gun at 50 yards.  Fire 5 rounds with the slap hammer, and five rounds with quill.  You should see the differnce and get better groups with the quill.

B.R.A.S.S.!!!!  You can't get the last S with a slap hammer and that light gun carraige.

It was a Hoot Dominick !!!! Thanks TO YOU !!!! anyway she began to "speak" w/ Golf Balls at 300 of 2f .
There was no recoil to speak of w/ ANY GB load .

The steel mil balls are IT , w/ 400 2f the gun would recoil back 2' and it actualy sounded like a cannon !
I think it's @ 5/8ths of a service load . Mike and Tracy are proly making more sabots than you can shake a stick at right now . ;D

WHAT GREAT fortune to have reestablished freindship w/ these guys after at least seven years and on back to 76' in gunsmith school !

We will try fuse next time instead of the slap hammer . As Tracy mentioned it yesterday and nearly launched a repeatability study on which angle to pull the lyanard from  ;D and DD confirmed the therory .

In fact I tried to tug it gently ,but then you are risking a slap KLINK....Oh Sh#* ! nothing .......Then the owner would after a respectable delay and w/ some trepadation (but not much) pull the hammer back again and "YANK THAT THING GOOD" ....at which point I was informed that "....you moved the cannon that time.." .

Wait just a minute here, everyone knows Mike is worse than I am about such things; he won't buy a new toaster at K-Mart before plugging it in first!  ;D ;D

RocklockI, remember this:  Abounding enthusiasm such as you have will overcome any amount of persnicketyness that we may have and besides, your attitude is so good, it's infectious and puts a smile on our faces too.  Dominic, "You done good!"  Gary's new cannon looks great and functions perfectly! You should have seen the look on Mike's face when Gary popped this basketball sized rock at 75 yards with a sizzling golf ball.  We all saw something slide down the face of the rock after we heard the load THWACK! of the hit.  As we all walked over to that rock, Mike's look of disbelief turned to a wide grin as he and Gary and I realized that it was a 4" slab of rock that slid off and NOT the golf ball's cover.

Respectable accuracy will come around, but not before a few more trips to the range for experiments and testing of ideas, methods and materials.  OH DARN, MORE FIRING RANGE WORK!  I wanted to stay home and watch Star-Trek re-runs, and they are dragging me out to the prairie!!  Wha, Wha, wha.   :'( :'( :'(

Tracy and Mike

It's a shame You guys don't live closer to Montana, we could have had an even better time yesterday.  Actually from the looks of the weather, It might have been better yesterday if I lived closer to tropical Colorado.
