pick me some barrels
« on: March 16, 2009, 04:12:35 PM »
I am about to order some barrels.  I have around $300.  One will be a 28 guage, that leaves me with 2 rifle or some other mix.  In Handis I currently have .243, 45-70, 22HRM,32" 12 guage and 26" 20 guage.  I can pretty much buy a .410 for what the barrel would cost.  I own other rifles in 30'06, 308, 22-250 .223 and 30-30.   I am thinking I need a 30-30 handi.  Next I am at a loss.  Any suggestions?  These will be to play with, and I will reload for whatever I get.  Anyone have a favorite that I need?

How about a 270 or a 280?

Sorry, didn't see you have a 30-06.

I would go with one of these, a 357mag, 44mag, or a 45 colt.
That way you could always go max with any one of them if you wanted.

357.  Hands down one of the "funnest" I have owned.  Recoil light enough your wife (girlfriend), kids, whoever can shoot it.  Very accurate.  Cheap to load for with cast bullets.  Powerful enough for close range hunting.

I forgot I wanted a .357 and they happen to have a few at the moment.  I have no problem getting a caliber that I own in another firearm....saves on dies.

I don't know who you spoke to at the factory that told you they have a few at the moment.
I was told the same thing, so I sent my frame in right after the first of the year to get fitted
with a 357 Mag barrel only to find out they are on backorder. According to the link in the email
that Remington sent me to check on the status of my order they are still on backorder. Just
when they will be in... who knows? :(

My answer is
22 Hornet or a handgun caliber you already own.
22 hornet is a great little round, fun, about as loud as 22 Mag but not the boom of 223 and all I can say is take some baking potatos to the range.  Lots of cheap fun.
The handgun caliber you already own like 45 colt, 44 mag, or 357 mag.

Go with the pistol calibers, easy to reload with carbide dies, lots of fun and cheaper than rifle cartridges.  And the Hornet and the 7mm-08 and the 30-30 and the, well you get the message.  DP
