H&R Model 058 Topper Barrels
« on: January 11, 2009, 07:27:20 AM »
I have an H&R Topper Model 058 Serial Number Prefix AS that has a 30.30 rifle and 3 inch chamber 20 gauge barrels. The forearm is of the screw on type.

My question is :

What other barrels were made for the gun, both in Rifle and Shotgun?

Is it still possible to find them and will they work in the reciever as is without major modifications?

I have used information found on this forum to change the hammer springs on this gun as well as smooth the trigger pull.

Any information you may provide will be appreciated.

Numrich has shotgun barrels listed for the older toppers. www.e-gunparts.com
It is anybodys guess as to fit on these barrels, but I believe they would work. There were several variations of these barrel made so take that into consideration.

With the reports of old barrels fitting great or not fitting at all on modern frames, my guess from my experience with just one M158 barrel that wouldn't come close to fitting without major cutting at the pivot, is that they had quite a variance in frame dimensions, either model to model, or just all of the cast iron frames in general.

I have a model 58 with 30-30 and 20 gauge also.  None of my Handi barrels fit this receiver.

Check this link for barrels that used to be offered:  http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=1560z58

Thanks for your responses....I had checked with Numrich and they were out. I was really wondering if I could find other rifle calibers that would work. By the way I really like the gun..yes it is a cheapie and ruff. However with new hammer springs and a little work on the trigger i can shoot 1.5 to 2 inches all day off the bench with the 30.30. It will bring home the bacon and a really handi lightweight rifle shotgun combo.

Thanks again.

There weren't many center rifle chamberings made by the old H&R, 22 Hornet, 22 Jet, 30-30, 357mag, as well as 44mag and 45-70 on the M155 Shikari, all were low pressure chamberings suitable for use on the cast iron frame, so don't plan on finding many suitable barrels for it or using a modern high pressure barrel.  ;)
