45-60 out of a 45-70???
« on: January 10, 2009, 09:28:22 AM »
I was reading over some old issues of Black Powder Cartridge News and in a old back issue there is mention  of shooting a 45-60 cartridge in a 45-70 rifle........  The gist was that it worked fine and the "jump up" from the shorter case length to the refilling wasn't an "issue" in accuracy out to 100 yards or so.  Does this sound right????

Again I believe in ONLY shooting the correct ammo out of ANY rifle but the thought did cross my mind that IF....(big assume here :o)...that IF this were a safe practice that this would be a  reduced 'recoil' load for someone either just starting out or just for plinking with ones favorite Buffalo Classic.  I ask Only because I do not know.  I would NEVER try something without first seeking sound advice......so I ask.

Thank you Tim. (my Lord, your like "M" in the Bond movies - reach into your bag of "goodies" and out comes and answer to the problem at hand ;D ;D ;D)  Could this work in a non- H&R maybe like a Sharps?.....and could that be why it was mentioned??????.....(now just curious)

It would depend on how close to specs the rim cut and rim sizes are, might work fine with some combo of brass and rifle chamber.

 A 40-65 is a necked down 45-70.  45-70 is .458/.459   the 40-65 is .406/.408. You can shoot the 40-65 in a 45-70, but I don't see how it would group at 100yrds.

I was looking in my Lyman handbook at the specs on both the 45-70 & 40-65.The rim is on both cartridges is .608".And it says the 40-65 is nothing more than a 45-70 case sized for a .410 diameter bullet.Correct me if i'm wrong though but that means you can resize 45-70 brass to 40-65 and not have to pay the higher prices for the 40-65 brass.

Ya Jon....45-60!!!!  I did some internet searching.  This is an old 'lever-gun' round I guess.  .  From what I can see a 45-60 is cut back from a 45-70 to 1.890"  I'll re-read the article on this but thinking about a .454 300 grn head sitting over some FF and a nice .30 wad.............it could get going like 'scat' (1400 fps) hummmmmmmmmm ::) ::) ::)

I'll get it right this time     45-60 FL/60 grs. bp 1315 ,  imr4198 25 grs. 1415  /  454  300gr.

You may do better with a wonder wad, 45-70 bore is .458/9. With a .454 you will lose a lot of the gases and may shave lead bad.
