Regulating barrels on a Savage 24 by using ammo?
« on: July 07, 2008, 12:53:22 AM »
We had a good thread on trying to regulate Savage 24 barrels; seems you can't do it mechanically. :(

Has anyone tried to get their rifle and shotgun barrels regulated by varying the ammo?  For a .30-30 over 12 gauge, you could try 150 grain or 170 grain flat-points or round nose bullets, or the new 160 Leverevolution spitzers.  They should each have a different trajectory.  For the shotgun you could vary the drams and shot weight, even using steel shot (which has significantly different ballistics) if necessary.

My goal would be to find a combination of cartridge and shell that both shoot to the point of aim on my scope at the appropriate range.  In other words, with my 2-7 scope set on 7 power, I would want the rifle sighted in 2"-3" high at 100 yards, and with the scope set on 2 power I would want the pattern of the shotgun to be dead on at 30 yards.

I think that by varying the ammo I might find a combination to get the elevations to match appropriately.  However, if the windage is significantly different between the barrels, I don't know that ammo will help.

Has anyone tried this?  thoughts? ???

Have you called Savage to see if they have a suggested/recommended ammo?

I have an M-24 in .22 WMR/20 ga and to get the .22s to group in the same place as 20 ga slugs I had to file away the lower part of the .22 barrel and fit a spring into the barrel band to hold the barrel down closer to the shotgun barrel, but that was with slugs which shoot much lower than the pattern of birdshot.  That is with a folding peep rear sight and bead front.
I also made up a second set of barrels for it in .22LR over 30/30 and that set wears a 4x scope. I wanted the .22 dead center at 65 yards and the 30/30 two inches high at 100. It took years of work and the invention of many new swear words to get them there but I finally am satisfied. So THEN I got the idea it would be neat to shoot some 170 grain cast gas checked bullets out of the 30/30 and to my great surprise I was able to find some loads which were pretty close, good enough for 100 yards anyhow.
The great dilemma with any combo gun is this: a rifle without a scope is only half a rifle but a shotgun with a scope is no shotgun at all.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

The scope on a shotgun is exactly why I didn't keep my 24 30-30 20ga. I never concerned myself with trying to regulate the shotgun with the rifle, but I did come up with a little 120 gr cast bullet at about 1000fps the would hit a 35 yds without changang the sights that were 3" high at 100 with full power loads with the 31141 cast bullet.

The way to shift the point of impact from side to side or up & down on any shotgun shooting shot is with the use of an off set choke.
That is provided the barrel is threaded for chokes.
I don't recall who makes them but I do know they are out there.
They probably are a custom made item with a custom made price to match!
It can be done!

I have one in .223/12 and I could never get both barrels to shoot in the same place.  I put a 2x7 Nikon on  it with see thru rings.  .223 is zeroed with the scope and the shotgun is zeroed in using the open sights.  Using it like that works fine,  but it seems odd to me they would make it like that.
