We had a good thread on trying to regulate Savage 24 barrels; seems you can't do it mechanically.
Has anyone tried to get their rifle and shotgun barrels regulated by varying the ammo? For a .30-30 over 12 gauge, you could try 150 grain or 170 grain flat-points or round nose bullets, or the new 160 Leverevolution spitzers. They should each have a different trajectory. For the shotgun you could vary the drams and shot weight, even using steel shot (which has significantly different ballistics) if necessary.
My goal would be to find a combination of cartridge and shell that both shoot to the point of aim on my scope at the appropriate range. In other words, with my 2-7 scope set on 7 power, I would want the rifle sighted in 2"-3" high at 100 yards, and with the scope set on 2 power I would want the pattern of the shotgun to be dead on at 30 yards.
I think that by varying the ammo I might find a combination to get the elevations to match appropriately. However, if the windage is significantly different between the barrels, I don't know that ammo will help.
Has anyone tried this? thoughts?
