Opinions on Tanto Blade Folding Knives
« on: January 21, 2009, 08:41:04 AM »
Do any of you carry a Tanto blade folding knife?
How do you like it for every day use.
Is there anything you really like about it?
I've been thinking of getting one.
It appears to me that the cutting edge(s) at the tip would be hard to sharpen.
Who do you think makes the best one for under $100?

The American style "Tanto" blade isn't a tanto at all; it was a design invented by the late Bob Lum, an  excellent knifemaker.  Genuine Japanese tanto blades resemble our "hunter" style of knife.  The big selling point with American tanto's is that that very strong tip is great for penetrating things(and people).  It depends how you use a knife, but for outdoors work for hunting or general everyday utility the traditional style blades seem a lot more useful to me.  But then again, any sharp piece of steel can be made to cut...more or less. I've heard that the tip area is hard to sharpen, but have never tried it.

Wonderful blade shape.
I've a Cold Steel medium non-serrated Voyager, for years, works great for me.
It's quite easy to sharpen the front bit of the blade, just sharpen the main part, then the front part, true to themselves, don't worry about the intersect, it will be plenty sharp after that.

Rio Grande, I've been looking at the exact same knife. I wondered about the sharpening the front part of blade aspect too. You just talked me into getting one. Thanks.

I picked up my 4" Voyager yesterday. This is a serious knife! Makes me wonder why I waited so long. I've wanted a Cold Steel for years, but always put it off. As sharp as it is, sharpening it is the last of my worries for a while. ;D
