My New Reloading Bench
« on: January 21, 2009, 04:36:40 PM »

Here is my set up. I live in a apartment and just got started reloading 223. I needed a reloading bench that didn't take up much room and could be stored in a closet when I'm not using it. Its also really convenient to take back home to my range to fine tune my loads. Everything is lockable and it is as stable as whatever you clamp it to. I made it out of Hard Maple Plywood and some 3/4 boards. I have only loaded up some preliminary loads and so far the only thing I found I am going to have to buy is a case tumbler, cleaning them all by hand is a real pain.

Here is a picture of it with the front on it and the side drawer open.

Very Nice.  Great looking workmanship.

I remember late night loading in the bedroom closet while the Mrs slept nearby.   ;D

Very nice!
I feel your pain on reloading in an apartment  ;)
My wife said no more clamping my press to a TV tray in the living room.

I just bought a "student" desk from wal-mart, but i realize i'm going to need to shore it up a little before i start reloading for anything that will require some force to full length size.... like the 270Win I'm about to start working on.

I have a lee trimmer, pain in the butt, but it works.  I had some brass given to me that had been trimmed already (I checked with my calipers of course).  The only upgrades I can see in the near future are a case tumbler from cabelas, and wilson bench mount case trimmer.  I can live without both but man they would make life easier.  I have 40 rounds of preliminary loads worked up.  5 each of 8 different loads seperated by .2 grains each to get me in the ball park.  Then, I will load 40 more rounds.  10 each of .1 grain increments from .4 grains surrounding the most accurate load without going over the limit I determine with these first loads.  Then I might play with seating depth if I want to get real particular.  In my H&R ultra varmint though, the lands are so far away that seating far out is not an option, not sure if its even worth messing with at this point.  I seated the bullets to the depth listed in the manual for now, but shooting 55 grain bullets, there isn't much meat to work with to seat it out too far, and on top of that they are boat tails making it even harder.  Well hopefully next weekend I will get a chance to go home and test out my new loads.
