Barrel crease?
« on: August 25, 2003, 05:10:13 AM »
Spotted a crease in Project 41's barrel on Saturday - don't remember seeing it before. It runs 1/2 barrel diameter. Starts at the scope base and ends under the foerarm. Not visable unless you catch the right reflective light. In other words, now that I know it's there I can see it, if I didn't know it was there I'd have to look for it. My concern is two fold: 1) This was noticed at the first range session since I did the cerrosafe mold and 2) this barrel has been subjected to some harsh loads.

I can't see any signs in the bore, but I don't have access to a bore scope to get a real good look. Still shoots the same, just troubled by this "line". Any ideas?

My vote goes to a tool mark, perhaps a gall from turning the barrel, that didn't quite get polished out.  I think "harsh" loads would result in other failure modes.  Just my half-nickel....

Take a sheet of printer paper. Hold it on the barrel with your  index finger slide  your finger and the paper together up and down the barrel over the mark.  Can you feel it?  Is it a dent or a bulge?

A dent it's cosmetic.  A bulge, might be cosmetic also. then it might be a ring in the barrel.   Hold the barrel up to the light and look for a reflection down the bore.  A good way to do this it to look at a telephone pole some distance a way.  the reflection of the pole should show as a line down the bore. If it is a bulge you will see a wiggle or dip in the reflection.
