Making some progress with research. have a question
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:05:27 AM »
I have been soing some research on my family tree and have been making some progress thank to the info I got from some of you on this forum.  I have noticed in some books and documents that there are small numbers after names.  Can someone tell me what these mean please?

Thanks,
Kevin

I thought that too, but the document had no foot notes, and the numbers only followed peoples names.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing but I was looking at a county register today and there were names of my family with numbers after the name. I asked a lady that owned the book what it meant and she told me it was a plot number to a grave site. I looked closer and each name listed had a cemetery or church listed with a reference for plot number (location of grave) and then who the parents were.

Not sure if that's it or not.  they were single digit numbers.

I have a book of one of my family lines.  The individuals are numbered and once you get the hang of the numbering system you can follow who belongs to which family.  It has been awhile since I have looked at the book.  I'll try to pull it out in the next couple of days and see if I can't explain this better.  I have also seen where generations were numbered, all individuals with the same number came from the same generation.

Also, in your other post about getting started.  The LDS church does have a free website that is very good.  www.familysearch.com  On the website there are tutorials and suggestions on how to get started.  You can also search their database which is quite extensive.  There is also a link to download free software for storing your information, PAF (Personal Ancestry File).  Most geneology programs have the ability to exchange data with each other.
