New to handis

Picked up a used HU serial number .223 Ultra Varmint. Cleaned it with a touch of Gun Scrubber. Put a box of Federal value pack 55gr through it.

1) No stuck cases-yay
2) Accuracy was a mystery since I found that a 1 piece Picatinny mount does not quite fit. Bore sighted by looking through the bore. Cool. Too bad the scope wiggled. Was hitting clay pigeons on the berm at 25 yards without much effort, shot a few rounds at paper. No keyholes. - fun, will order rings
3) I guess that it has an ejector. If I barely open the action and then point the case at my chest, it flys about a foot and falls into my hand. However when I opened it with an unfired round, it flew a few feet into the snow. Is this normal? I was expecting to get teeth loosened, sparrows knocked out of the air, cases landing in the rafters?
4) The hammer extension is on the left. I am right handed. It seems to work. Is this right?
5) Was shooting in the snow. Had some light rust speckles the next am. Wiped it down with some 3 in 1. What should I really coat it with?

I love shooting it BTW. I love the way it breaks down. Looking for a .22 to balance it.

Yes your barrel is a ejector and they are fun when the shell kicks out.
The hammer extension can be mounted on either side.
It should have a small allen screw inside to lossen it, just swap sides.
For sure you will need a mount and a set of rings.
As far as the rust about any good gun oil will work.
Some folks like to degreese them and apply a good coat of car wax on them but I just use gun oil myself.

While you are wating to get the mount and rings make sure you take the time to read the help & stickie section.
There is a wealth of info in there and a vast # of fine members on here who are always ready to lend a helping hand to a fellow shooter.

Once you get it dialed in don't forget to post another range report.

Welcome to the forums. The 223 Handi can be a really accurate.
You definitely need a good base and a good scope to bring out
the accuracy.
I checked Midsouth first and did not see this mount or rings listed.

I recommend the following.

For a base:

I have this setup on my 223 bull barrel Handi and it will shoot  groups like
this at 100 yards.



Also check out the FAQ's for accuracy. The forearm is one of the keys,
as is the trigger. Very easy to do if you follow the instructions.
