Ruger Convertables...
« on: February 08, 2009, 02:58:21 AM »
I am thinking of purchasing a Ruger 22lr/22mag but I am not sure which to get.  I want adjustable sights.  Maybe that limits the options considerably.

Any recommendations?

Are they fairly accurate, say, dancing a can at 15-20 yards.  Plinking only...

Thanks...BCB

If you get a convertible I know of is the single six.  Mine has adjustable sights and will easily bounce a can at the mentioned distance.  Mine shoots better with the LR instead of the mag, and is lots cheaper for plinking as well.

I have an old 6.5 inch Ruger Single Six convertable. It has fixed sight but is still a very accurate little handgun. I enjoy both the 22 Magnum and the 22 LR high speed loads. If I was going to get a new one I would go for the 4 5/8 inch model with adjustiable sights. If you get one you will not be sorry. With the high cost of ammunition a high quality accurate .22 makes a lot of sense.

On my 21st birthday I went and bought a 6 1/2" bicentenial model. Always wished I would have gotten the 5 1/2". Has a very lite trigger and very accurate.

Have had three rimfire "convertables".   Favorite was the Colt New Frontier Buntline (7.5"), but the couple of Old Model Ruger Single Sixes were OK as well.    Really liked my OM Bearcat and the OM Super Bearcat I replaced it with as well.   Don't like the New Model Ruger's (but that's 'cause I'm old school).

I have a 3 screw Single Six  5 1/2" with adj. sights and a patridge front sight ( mfg. date 1967 ). Bought it at a gun show a few years back. Had shot one just like it many years ago and fell in love with it, but the guy wouldn't part with it. It was the perfect balance and weight single action for a 22 rimfire. Always liked the patridge front sight on them better than the ramp sight. Finally found one in like new condition and bought it.
It's a good shooter. It's not a target grade shooter but it is very accurate. It shoots the 22 rimfire more accurate than the magnums.
Make sure you try different type of ammo because all 22's have their own preference to the ammo they like.

Good Luck.

Been reading and learning—I’m the one who started the original post…

Well, I purchased one with a 6.5” barrel and I am pleased already…

I have tried about a dozen different brands/types of 22 Rimfire ammo and it shoots CCI 22 Short HP the best—I was surprised with that…

The 22 WRM shoots pretty well also…

As with all of my Ruger cylinder guns, I have changed the springs to Wolff springs.  They really help with the trigger pull.  Anyone tried them in these Single-Sixes?

Thanks again…BCB

BCB:  Yup.  I changed the trigger spring to a 30 oz.  and the hammer spring to 15 lbs.  Lots of creep.   It pulls a lot nicer, smoother.  I have yet to fire it.   We'll see.  Jim

same as above,I have an old model, but for some reason it shoots the mags much better than the long rifle, one gunsmith told me that the barrel is made for the mags.

I bought one years ago 6.5" with mag cylinder. The mags shoot pretty good, but the LR is more than accurate enough for small game hunting and certainly plinking. I dont think that you can buy a better single action .22 (unless you want to spend for a Freedom Arms), than the Single Six. I cannot tell you how many thousands of rounds that I have shot out of this thing, but I have never had to replace or repair anything on it. I reccomend them.
