no primers?

well i am just starting to get into reloading, just ordered a press kit and dies and other things.i am having to buy everything online because there is no place close to where i live that handles any reloading supplies. i started to make a second order for bullets, brass, primers and powder and cant find anyone that has small rifle primers in stock. Ive spent the last 2 days looking online and still havent found any. thought maybe someone here could point me in the right direction?

It is not the best of times, right now, for handloaders. Especially for someone just starting out and have not yet built up a stock of supplies. Hopefully, this day, Jan. 20, 2009, will not be the beginning of the worst of times for handloaders in this country.
The demand for handloading supplies and lack thereof, is at a point that I have never witnessed in my years of handloading.
I can offer no advice or sources of small rifle primers other than to ask your circle of friends, family and members here on GBO that may live close to you, if they might have some in their possesion that they would be willing to sell. At least until things calm down...

Just looked at Natchez/Midsouth/Cabellas/Midway/Graffs. All I could find in stock were some sizes of Mag Tech primers. I received my order from Midway two weeks ago for 15k primers. Looks like I just got in under the wire. Some of the sites say they expect to ship backorders about the middle of February. Sure hope so!

All my distributers are having a hard time filling orders. At time's they will limit me to how many I can order. Sometime's I only get 25,000 to 30,000 at a time. Buy the time you split that up between small and large, pistol or rifle, it's not many. I don't even know Savage, but if you divide that up between rifle/pistol/shotgun, that's not that many. There are alot of compitition shooters that will run thru 5,000rds. in a single summer just in one caliber.  gypsyman

newdad, be patient. The stocks of reloading supplies is cyclic these days. Just keep checking Midwayusa, Graff & sons, mid south,Cabelas ,and Natchez.

Both local Sportsman's Warehouses were like that.  I even asked a guy that worked there if they were not stocking reloading supplies any more (it looked like they had a going out of business sale in that section).  He said, no.  They had just been swamped since Christmas.  What little comes in gets sold that day or the next.

Gander Mtn still had some here in Bowling Green.  Another reason peple are stocking up is the new encoded bullet law making it's rounds in several states.  The way Ky's bill read; once these encoded bullets were perfected, home brews would be illegal.  I don't know if any states have actually passed the bill yet, but most of the bills were to establish a tax on guns and ammo to pay for the massive data base to record all the encoded bullets.

Couldnt find any sm. pistol primers last week in town, we have very few suppliers anyway and the shelves were bare at least for what I needed. Gander Mtn in Pittsburgh had plenty though and we were going there anyway to visit my son  ;D
But as a new reloader, yeah things are difficult since I don;t have a big supply of anything.

Ha, ha. That's a normal quanity for an online order. You have to order at least that many to overcome the haz mat fee. Wish I could have talked my shooting buddies into ordering with me to save a little more. Looking for a deal now on bulk pulldown or surplus powder.

Just another prime example of YOU CAN'T FIX STUPID , trying to stop handloading and bullet casting is like trying to keep the sea from washing up on the beach , ain't gona to happen !

keep looking guys, small rifle primers were nonexistant at the last couple gun shows i went to but i found some locally and got them.ive gradually got enuf stuff to las rest of my life i hope.yuall best do the same. bullets are whats going high dollar roun here. im bout ready to switch to cast.
