DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHY?

Does anyone know why the Russians used a .30 bore in the Nagant 7.62X54 yet a .311 or .312 bore in the 7.62X39 in the SKS and AK ? Pete ???

Russian Nagants have a .312 bore
Finnish Nagants have a .308 bore

Both of my Izzy arsenal Nagants have .311-.312 bores

Russian/Soviet Mosin Nagants (MN) for the most part run .312 in the grooves.  Finland made a couple variants of the MNs that were bored to .308 in the grooves, but by the time the Finnish M39 came out they were boring them at .310 that would chamber and fire captured Soviet 7.62x54r ammo.  I’ve read but never verified that the rifling in the Tokarev (SP) Pistol with the same as the MN rifles and that some Tokarev pistol barrels were made from sections of salvaged NM barrels.  At the very least makes a great story.  Reloading for several MNs I find Hornady .312 bullets give resonable accuracy in the GOOD barrel of my M44, while .311 Sierras shoot great in my EXCELLENT 91/59 and VERY GOOD M39.  VARGET and IMR 4350 are both great powders in the 7.62x54R.

Russian 7.62X54 is .310to .312 there quality control on barrel size was horrible. 7.62X25 are .308s I've never seen any ammo for one that wasn't .308. As far as I've seen all Finn 7.62x54s where .308 also, Thats just my experiance thou, You can shoot the .310/.311 stuff out of a .308 bore just fine,( all mini 30s are .308) so useing captured ammo is not a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I have not had a Nagant, and was only going by an old loading manual which had it listed in the .308 area, while the 7.62X39 was listed in the .310 listings with the .303 Brit. -Pete

Russian barrels for the 7.62x54R, 7.62x39 and 7.62x25 are all nominally .310-.312. They did this to allow the greatest possible commonality in manufacturing.

I have three 7.62x25s and they are all .308s not .310 It even states that in every reloading manual I've read.

I have seen MNs with bore sizes from .308 to .316
Some nagant revolvers have been miked at .298 bore.
not very standardized...

I'm sure this has gone over into the sks's & Ak's too.  Maybe with the bore sizes being different plus the ammo manufacturers offering the wrong size bullets these guns are known for being inaccurate in some cases it may not be the guns fault.  My norinco sks's are very accurate using norinco ammo but i haven't really shot any other brand of ammo yet.  I guess its something were going to have to check if we have an accuracy problem.  If the bullet diameter is ok for the bore size and its still not accurate i would recrown the muzzle next.

With the mosins isn't the barrels stamped with a "D" meaning the "D" round is the ammo to shoot in it.  I believe the "D" means the diameter of the bullet there using.  You see a "D" stamped on the mosin barrels. I think it was the finnish mosins that wer estamped with the "D" for the finnish D cartridge on the barrel shank.  I guess some rifles were upgraded and some were not this is why we see the different bore sizes.

If you are going to reload the MN then slug the bore and go from there. The two I have run .312 so I load the Hornady .312 150 gr bullet made for the 303 Brit it shoots 1 inch groups. all the  new 7.62 X 54 ammo I have used is running .310 and the groups run up to 3-4 inches at 100 yds
