Mossberg 817 .17 HMR
« on: December 13, 2008, 07:29:41 PM »
On Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving) I went early to Dick's Sporting Goods for ammo and they had a special on the Mossberg 817 .17 hmr for 100.00. I thought it felt pretty good considering it's price and the fact that I already have a Ruger revolver in this caliber. I mounted a BSA 3x9 that I had available and am getting ready to take to the range to sight in and see how it shoots. Does anybody have one of these rifles and able to give me a report on how it handles? Mine is the base blued model with black synthetic tapered barrel without iron sights. Honestly I have been hoping to purchase a Savage Thumbhole heavy barrel or Marlin heavy barrel and I am not expecting the Mossberg Intl. (made in brazil) to shoot as good as the higher priced models but then again these 817's usually go for 150.00-200.00. If it can hit a pop can at 100 yards then I'll be satisfied for using it for squirrels and such. Sure hope to hear from someone good or bad. Thanks.

In addition to any info here, you may want to check over at RimfireCentral.com on the Mossberg forum.

I've got one and I love it.  I bought it a couple of weeks ago and have put 50 rounds thru it.  It will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards all day long.  I've got a ''NRA Sport Optics by Brunton" 3-9x40 scope on it and it's a great combination.  The only thing I've done to it is give the bolt a nice application of Militec-1 and work it in real good and that helped to smooth things up.  I also put a sling swivel stud in the forearm for a bipod.  It worked, but I like it better without the bipod and just shoot it from a rest.
