50 Degees, Harley Time in WI
« on: March 14, 2009, 11:55:55 AM »
It hit 50 in WI today. Finally. Sooooooo I pushed the Fatboy to the middle of the garage, hit the choke, hit the ignition and after a minute or 2 it was running and ready to ride, so I thought. Down the road I went, about a mile when it just was not going to smooth out and run right, turned around and back home I went. Seemed like it was running on one cylinder. I felt the front cylinder, hot, then the back cylinder, not so hot mmmmmmmmm. While the bike was at idle I pulled the plug wire off the back cylinder, still ran just the same, rough. Shut the bike off, replaced the NGK plug with a new one, now I got both cylinders running! Back to the ride, 50 degrees and sunshine, good times. No more NGK plugs for me.

Same here in Utah 52 me and OL rode 20 miles to our favorite coffee shop for smoke and a cup! Took the long way home 35 miles total 57 miles today all is well. Funny how a little time on the Electra Glide makes all well. Letting it cool down a little then drain oil new filter and ready for spring. Going to get up into 60s next week guess I'll have to ride to work! ;D

What year is your fatboy cheese?  I

had a '79 sportster that would foul the plugs if you looked at it funny.

We've got decent weather here also and I'm working all kinds of overtime. Take it while you can I guess.

Grim,

It is a 1999. Last year with a carb. Maybe I should try these plugs, since they are a GBO sponsor.

Mornin' Cheese';
        Could be that it wet sumped while it sat over the winter, and when you fired it up, it put a lot of oil out through the breather and into the air cleaner. That would foul a plug - not uncommon, and can scare the hell out of you what with all the smoke and mess until it scavenges the oil that's laying in the cases. We take out the timing plug, run a small plastic air line hooked up to the vacum pump down into the cases, and suck out the oil that is sitting in there before we fire it up in the spring. (The big bike doesn't wet sump, as the oil pan is below the pump, but on the softail, the tank is above, and when it sits for 3 or 4 months, some oil always seems to get past the check ball some how)
   Might be talking out of my a$$ here, as your bike is a twin cam with a different oil pump than our evolutions have. Just a thought, and probably other guys here on this board who have seen it happen.
   Glad to hear you finally got some weather - Been plenty warm enough to ride here, but the roads are still shining with salt dust even after all the rain we have had. Will not take them out in that, but about time to run them out of the house and back into the garage. Still need to change the oil in the 'King (going to switch it over to Mobile One), and need to bleed the front brake on the Springer. Besides that, we are SO ready.
    All  you guys have a good one - and ride safe;

In 1999 Harley put the Twin cam and the 80 Evo in the an assortment of their line up. Mine happens to be an 80 Evo. So what I think happened is only the back cylinder was flooded bad enough to foul the plug, maybe. A predicted high of 53 today and 60 tomorrow, more Harley Time! It has been a very long winter and I am excited.

Guess I should have looked at your picture closer, as that's an Evo for sure - and it needs a good run to clean it out. Bet you can handle that huh?? Go for it.
And be careful.

OL's bike - and the "Oh, by the way, I could use a new jacket for Valentines Day" jacket. Went cruising a few dealers and found the damn thing, and "it matches the bike".......    More $$$  >:(  >:(
She's worth it.

Mine is still in boxes. Sad to say but it will be for awhile yet. Gotta get the cash flowing again before I even think about my Rigid project. :(

Cheese, I really do like both the NGK & Denso products having used them exclusively in the past.
