Savage 340 Not Extracting?
« on: January 19, 2009, 09:59:41 AM »
I'm looking for a little help on this one. It's actually a variation of the 340, a model 842, but it uses the same band-type extractor. I bought it used last year and it really likes Hornady's Leverevolution ammo, but after 8-10 shots in succession it will stick one in the chamber and not extract until the barrel cools down. I mean "stick" as in, run a cleaning rod down from the muzzle to pop it out. The brass doesn't look to have problems.
Is this a pressure problem from this hotter new ammo in an old gun? or is it another problem? It has a similar barrel nut to the newer savages, is there some adjustment needed there? I've replaced the extractor because it was well-worn when I got it. The gun looks good, but it has been well-used. It puts them into 1" at 100 yards and I hate to get rid of it.
Thanks,

DONT GIT RID OF IT!!  And if you do, my number is............

Those little savages are great guns.  I have a 30-30 and a 222.  Someday I will find a 225.

The guns were notorious for having rough chambers.  They also get pretty dirty so you have to keep them clean.  My 340s have had the chambers cleaned good with polishing compound.  Flitz, OSSO, JB bore paste, or similar polish on a .410 bore mop gets you started.  32-38 bore mop for the neck area.  If the chamber is really bad, 0000 steel wool with the polish.

I picked up a used gun that sold really cheap due to similar problems.  That 0000 steel wool on the end of a 14" drill bit worked wonders.  I used masking tape on either end of the steel wool.   I taped around the bit so it just fit into the bore.  I put on the steel wool, then added tape so the bit would center in the chamber.  Slow speed with the Makita drill moving the drill bit back and forth in the chamber.  You have to be careful that you don't pull out too far and let the smaller end of the bit bounce around in the chamber.  You can also use a little "plasti-dip" on the tip of the drill bit so you don't gouge your barrel or chamber.

This last method leaves a lot of residue in the chamber and in the reciever area.  You have to clean everything up really well when done.  BUT, it can really smooth up a sticky chamber.

Good luck! Hope it works out for you.

What Steve P said. It's not that big of a problem.
GOOD LUCK

Thanks, for the advice. I've tried the polishing thing with a brass brush on the end of a cleaning rod with a cordless drill. I just wasn't sure if I would be doing more damage than good because like I said it's a good shooter. I will get after it a little harder.
Thanks again,
