WGRS peep sigth help
« on: March 07, 2009, 03:09:44 AM »
i put the WGRS sight on my 22lr sportster and can't get it on the paper....my spotter says it shoots over the target, so i need a taller front sight....mine is a factory sight and measures .430....if any of you guys have this sight on your sportster(mounted directly to the barrel via rear scope base holes) could you tell me the appropriate front sight height?......Mike

If it will fit the front sight off of a .22 hornet is .580 or so That worked for my .357 and the williams FP peep.

Mike, here's Brownell's sight height calculator, plug your numbers it to get the needed front sight height. The link is in the FAQs and Help sticky in Peep and Firesights.  ;)

thanks quick....i did that...used my caliper....the way the numbers worked out in order to use the WGRS-HR peep sight on the 22lr sportster the front sight height needed is over .700 due to the difference in diameter of the barrel from muzzle to breech. That's a pretty tall front sight, so i think i'll change plans....now i'm considering putting a red dot sight on this thing. I just really liked the way you could carry this little rifle with your hand wrapped around the reciever.....

When I put one on my Marlin I decided to put on a ramp, that improves the look of the firearm overall. I just JB'd it over the original dovetail. That was years and many miles ago and it is still there,

Here's another option in case you still want to use the peep.  ;)

in case anyone is interested i ran the numbers on my sportster(22lr) re front sight height needed to use the WGRS peep sight on that gun, overall front sight height is .730. that calculation was done using brownell's calculator and a dial caliper with the peep set in the middle of the elevation range. I also did it with my 357 mag barrel....that front sight needs to be .653.....FYI....Mike

both can be achieved with the williams "shorty" ramp @ 3/8 (.282 to top of dovetail) and adding appropriate N width fire or bead sight

Zoner   If you are going to be buying stuff I would strongly recommend a blade front rather than a bead to go with your peep. A bead is ambiguous . Do you want the bullet to hit in the area covered by the center of the bead or on top or where? I blew a lot of shots with the peep and bead combination until I swore them off and now only use blades. It is hard to find blades these days probably in large part because iron sights are disappearing altogether. Most of my "blades" are beads that I have modified with JB weld and a file. There is a reason why the military uses blades instead of beads.
