I use several powders with good results for my .40 S & W.HP 38,Universal,HS 6,SR 7625,Titegroup,Clays, & Power Pistol. For just plinking I would use Clays or Universal;but for self protection or something along those lines I would go with Power Pistol IMHO  ;D............Rick

Being the dinosaur that I am, I use Bullseye powder in .40. Actually, I use it in all my pistol & revolver loads. All my loads are  for range use, but would pass for social applications. I have H110/Unique/Blue Dot/2400 powders that I could use for heavy loads if needed. I just haven't found another powder that works better for my applications than BE.

I wanted a load that would work with a 185 grain cast bullet in the .40 S&W and also work with a 140 grain cast bullet in the .357 Sig, all with one powder measure setting. I'm not looking for max velocity nor am I really concerned with pinpoint accuracy. I'm not a target shooter, but for self defense work if you can hit something the size of a water melon at ten feet you're probably ok.

While I didn't try dozens of powders, I found a workable solution with AA #7.
