Hunter Safety Instructor Needs Your Help
« on: December 29, 2008, 06:19:29 AM »
Gentlemen and Ladies:

I instruct hunter safety in Washington State.  As a component of my class, I like to introduce the students to unique types of ammunition.  To do this, I pass around examples of the ammunition.  I am asking that if any of you reload unique calibers that you send two "dummy rounds" to me.  I would happily pay any shipping charges that you incurr.  I would like the case to be empty and primer-less and the ball seated.

Here is a list of calibers that I currently have:

25-06
7mm-08
30-30
30-06
7x57
45-70
223 Remington
243 Winchester
308 Winchester
6.5x55
6.8mm Remington
22-250
222 Remington
204 Ruger
260 Remington
30 Carbine
44-40 Winchester
32-20 Winchester
38 Special
41 Remington Mag
357 Mag
44 Mag
45 Win Mag
45 Colt
380 Auto

If you have any other calibers that you could kindly add to my collection, I and my students would be very appreciative.  You can email me at ejb@ecgmc.com if you have questions, or would like me to Paypal you shipping charges.

Thanks.

Gentlemen:

You are all FANTASTIC!!!!

Curtis and Kurt: I will take you up on all that you can provide with the correct headstamp.  One of the things that we teach in the class is to look at the headstamp to make sure that the ammunition will fit the firearm.  It will only confuse the students if there is ammunition that is of one type, but headstamped differently.  I understand that there is a learning point here, but our classes are very basic.

Building dummies without loading dies
« Reply #11 on: January 01, 2009, 02:35:42 PM »
Building dummies without loading dies.

Something I learned through trial and error.

Super Glue is too brittle.

Clean brass.  Sizing brass is not necessary for rounds not intended to be chambered in a firearm.

For Boxer primed cases.  Use a socket as a base. Use a thin steel punch and punch out the fired primer.  Lee makes a nice tools for .22 and 30 caliber cases.  Berdan primers must be drilled out, unless you have a way to force the primer out hydraulically.

With the help of a matchstick or toothpick, smear RTV-any color- inside the case neck.

Insert an appropriate projectile into the case neck to the proper depth, rotating to obtain even sealant distribution.

Wipe off excess sealant with a paper towel.

Lay the cartridge down on your work bench, horizontally.  Standing case vertically runs the risk that the bullet will slide into the  case cavity.

Allow RTV to cure for 24 hours.

Finished demo cartridge.

Note:  Using fired, unsized cases, these may not chamber in your gun.

Note2:  In the interest of domestic tranquility, Don't get RTV on the kitchen table.

With a dummy round why take the old fired primer out unless you are going to add an eye screw to make a key chain or other such item?

Think about todays litigious society.  Remove the primer and there is no doubt that the round is inert.  Have you ever had a cartridge not fire on the first strike but discharged on the second?  Unfortunately, it has happened in a classroom.  For safety considerations, we can take no chances in the classroom.

The primer pocket can be filled with RTV and then used safely for dry firing.

OK I have used plastic rod to fill the primers to make snap caps but did not think of sending a live round to him.
Hey PM me where and if you want these 375's.
