Help Needed--10" Contender sight question (41 mag)
« on: January 25, 2009, 05:39:59 PM »
I have an older 10" Contender bull barrel in 41 Rem Mag with the tall silver solder front sight that I cant seem to get sighted in properly. I removed the scope/mount and want to return the barrel to iron sights. It groups good, but need to move the point of impact some more....Here's the details--I installed a newer model rear sight(from a 14" 7-30) but I cant get the groups centered(not enough sight adjustment). The sight has bottomed out against the barrel, but I still need more "down" elevation adjustment. So I guess I need a different height rear sight blade. Can anyone please tell me what the correct height rear sight blade should be for this barrel (i.e., measure yours) so that I look for another rear sight?

So here I was all ready to refer you to the chart in the faq stickies, and go figure it doesn't have .41 mag on it.  My guess is that it is the medium height, since 357 mag and max and 44 mag are both medium.  That chart shows a 7-30 Watters is a high on a 10 inch barrel, and I forgot to look for the 14.  The sticky also has heights for all three and heights of front blades.  Check it out at the beginning of this forum.

Good luck

All sounds tada Keith except the 10" 357 MAG and 357 MAX use #5 front sights while the 10" 44 MAG barrels use a #4 front sight even though they all use the same medium height rear sights.

The 7-30 14" barrel sights are high BTW.

Somewhere on my computer I have the formula saved, just don't know where.

Yep, just measure your blade and go one size shorter.  Sizes are as follows:

Low  0.110"
Med  0.200"
High  0.270"

The rear blade I tried first does not match any of the three measurements quoted.  It measures .485" overall height (and .385" to the bottom of the sight notch)??? Front sight height (above barrel) is .575".  Looks like they are measuring height another way on the picture in the sticky??

The measurements I quoted are from someone's scan of "One Good Shot" page 21.

I checked some of my sights with a caliper and found that these three measurements are true on the wide style rear sight only (.940" across the blade).  I measured from the top of the slot in the "standing" portion of the sight to the top of the blade (highest part).  The narrow blade sights are constructed differently so these measurements don't apply to them.

I hope I explained that clearly, if not I can post a picture without too much trouble.
