What should I do??????????
« on: February 01, 2009, 12:21:41 PM »
OK, have read the FAQ's about swapping barrels on one receiver and possible accuracy problems. My new Handi is a .45-70 and I would like to purchase a 30-06 barrel and swap back in fourth during hunting season depending on which stand I hunt etc... However after reading the posts regarding swapping of barrels I can't make my mind up if I should just purchase a complete gun or do the swap thing?? What would yall do?? Come on guys give me your comments on this.....   and sorry for bringing this up cause I know i'm bringing up an old topic that has been beat to death.

Thanks in advance for comments,
Scott

Me again. Let me add that I would really like to do the barrel swap on one receiver due to my current budget...

Thanks,
Scott

if your current economic state is such, you really have all spring and summer to get the funds together , right ? :-\
if you end up doing the barrel swap and have accuracy issues you will kicking your own ass when you miss that buck this hunting season, right ?  :o
not to mention the frustration of weeding thru the accuracy issues of barrel swapping  ::)
two complete guns.. ;D

If you're gonna swap barrels on one frame, it's best to have a dedicated forend for each barrel. then you can fine tune it to the barrel for best accuracy.  ;)

Falcon:
Just one other thought for you to consider.

The price of a used barrel and another forearm as QUICK suggested (SMART IDEA, I am doing the same) or a new barrel and forearm from the factory along with the shipping you are close to half the way there to a new gun, price wise!
You are only talking about one gun extra, AT THIS TIME.
As for many of us, we already have many barrels, like myself and many complete guns so we can play around with them to come up with a combination that will shoot.
At the moment you don't have that option.

I would go with the second gun!

I also would go for the complete gun. I have bought many many barrels and now wish to have more receivers.  I was actually at a couple stores today. (My buddie drove me. :D ;D) Looking for another gun in either a caliber I would like to own or one in a caliber I don't want but that is saleable...  ::) ;D

Something else to consider, if your not 100% sold on the '06 as a second.... watch for a used H&R of adequate caliber and grab it at a savings over a new gun...  If you would accept a 308, 270, 280, 7mm-08 the likelyhood of one becoming available quicker are in your favor.

I am assuming you need the 06 to "reach out a bit more than the 44 can?

I agree with all above. Get a complete gun. Then you dont have to worry about leaving something loose, or overlooking your magic set up for accuracy.

Quickdtoo and CW quit, you are making some of us jealous :o and you will scare SFalcon into getting away from handy's :D

Getting a whole gun is probably the best option; however, the option of a barrel with a dedicated forearm is also worthy of consideration.  I have 4 rifles and 1 (308) that I swap a 45/70 barrel on.  I have dedicated forearms for both barrels and don't use a torque wrench to tighten the screw.  (Do have 35 or more years exp. tightening bolts)  I don't seem to have accuracy issues with either rifle when I swap.

Just another opinion.................

I agree with Jim, the .45-70 will work fine beyond 200 yards with Hornady's Leverevolution ammo. I sighted mine 2 inches high at 100, and checked it at 50, 200, 250 and 300.  A mildot scope helps learning holdover.  It's a lot easier if you find a load you like and stick with it.  It is hard to know what a bullet will do if you keep changing ammo.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.
