Carriage Color

      I am struggling with a carriage color choice for my GB Naval Cannon. Let me describe the carriage so that all will know what I am working with. Imagine a Dahlgren meets USS Cairo Carriage. It is like the Cairo except that it has rear skis and just front wheels. It is in the finish stages of construction now. So I don't have pics. I know red and black are options. But what other colors were used on naval cannons.

THe British Navy used a baby....er a butterscotch yellow.

    Anybody else have any color suggestions. I started the carriage as a four wheeled Naval. But found some picks of the Marsilly carriage and fell in love with the design. So over to the table saw the carriage went for some careful and calculated re cutting then I attached two blocks to the back and shaped these into my skis.  I also removed the front block of wood that was for the axle and will be going with two Pillow block bearings just like the wood Marsilly carriage used for the dahlgrens. Everything is shaped and sanded. I just need to paint it.  I was thinking a dark Navy blue almost grey. Would this color have been used by anyone on there naval carriages.

as it aint an exact reproduction of anything ,
why not paint it in a color combination YOU likes ??

you build it
you will use it
you should feel pride of it

How about a nice lightly stained red , w/ Chestnut Ridge military stain . Then a hand rubbed oil finish .

Just let the wood shine on it's own .  YMMV

If the wood grain has no serious defects to hide, Spar Varnish over bare wood would be my choice. I would skip the stain as the Spar Varnish will darken it a bit anyway, and it will continue to darken as it ages over time.

The reason that I hate plain ole paint is that it doesn't last forever and I hate scraping/painting over and over again. That is not to say that Spar Varnish lasts forever, but a bit of mild sanding to remove deteriorated bits of it followed by another coat will bring it to "new" all over again.

Maybe you are lucker than I and have an inside place to store your gun. I lack a garage and the living room is off limits to cannons, so they sit out in the weather all the time. The best I have been able to do is put a plastic folding card table over my naval gun and an upside down plastic storage container sits over my mortar.

If it's a Marsilly style carriage. I prefer the "furniture grade" wood over painting.  ;)
