5mm / my first range report
« on: February 07, 2009, 10:21:52 AM »
Took the barrel out this afternoon to see just what kind of workmanship Larry had put into it , I must say that it worked flawlessly , lock up was great , the extractor was more than adequate for the cases to come out and the brass was well supported in the chamber , sorry I don't have a target to show but I wasn't wadding back through the 8" of icewater to get it . :o

Barrel was topped with a Bushnell 4-12 X 40 scope for this test run , ammo was the Centurion 30g HP's , took 7 rounds to get it on paper @ 50 , once that was done out to 100 it went . The groups were about what I had expected for a RF Handi at 100 , very close to what Larry was getting with maybe a little less vertical stringing , also the cases were coming out a touch on the dirty side , this I also blame on the ammo .

The weather was on the cool side at around 45 and a 15 to 20 MPH / L to R cross wind , next time I plan to take the Chrono along as well as a better rest , I want to see what this little rig can truly do .

Great to here Stimpy .IIRC mine Chronyed just short of 2400 in my Remington. Certainly dirtyer than the 17 rimefire but don't have much trouble cycling in my gun til about 100 rounds...sure dirty when you clean it though. I got a 3-12 Sweet 17 on mine.Kurt

Did you notice that the powder seems to have a very strange smell to it?  It seemed strange to me, but then I could just have a brain tumor.  :-\

Isn't the new 5mm ammo Eley primed?

If so, the smell may be the same as what the .22 Eley rimfire ammo is famous for.

It's accurate, but, quoting ole Shakesphere, something's rotten in Denmark.

Ya Larry , it did have an odd smell to it , something between Unique and rotten eggs  ::) ok maybe not that bad but odd just the same , almost like a firecracker / flashpowder smell .

And yes it did have the same sort of smell that the Eley ammo does .
