New(2008 and later) 44mags only come on SB1 frames with synthetic stocks and no sights, 2007 and older SB2s will have sights and pallet wood stock, but I wouldn't recommend any older than 2007 due to the overbore barrels, Marlin started making the barrels in early 2007 and tightened the bores up considerably, the overbore and slow 1:38" twist wasn't a good combination.

Tim, any gunmaker that can produce a 45/70 lever gun that will do better than 1 moa with cast bullets should be able to get the best from a break open single shot.
I'll take your advice and get a new one, I've found a guy who will get me one for $225 + tax. I'm going to chop the barrel to the min legal length any way.

The other alternative is buy a used SB2 Handi or just a frame in the classifieds here and send it in for an accessory barrel and stock set, then you'd be assured of getting a late model barrel, you can also get a upgraded stock if you choose to, I only send in frames with no stocks, shipping is about $10 insured USPS priority.  ;)

I haven't shot cast in my .44mag yet, but I have shot 355gr cast in my .444 Handi which is also a Marlin made barrel, but is 1:20".  ;)

Another place to check is http://www.whittakerguns.com/ they have great prices and are excellent to deal with.
