S & W 642,

That would for sure get you going, but you still need a good reloading manual. I'd suggest the newest version of Lymans and since you are going the Lee route, I'd also get Lee's second edition.

I forgot to put That I have already bought the Lyman 49th edition reloading manual.

That's excellent S&W. I also suggested the Lee book because Lee basically reviews all the Lee equipment and shows how to use it properly.

Of the equipment you listed above, I have the following: Auto Disk Powder Measure Riser; Classic 4 Hole Turret Press; Deluxe Handgun 4-Die Set 38 Special, 357 Magnum; Pro Auto Disk Powder Measure; Powder Funnel 22 to 45 Caliber.

I've never used the Pro Auto Disk Powder Measure because I also had a Hornady balance beam scale and was just used to weighing out powder with it, so I didn't change to the Auto Disk, however, I use the Riser with the Lee funnel all the time and they work great together. The Press and the Carbide Dies are both excellent.

S&W,

With the pro disk powder measure, you will find the Lee powder through expander dies very helpful, and they are affordable.

My newest gadget that I LOVE is the RCBS Universal Hand Priming Tool.  Midsouth sell it for under $50, and it is AWESOME.

Bottom line, safety first.  Handgun cases can easily be double charged.  Do not multitask, and keep your reloading bench immaculate and organized.

Have fun.

You're missing, I think, a powder scale. Not completely necessary, but it's good to check on what exactly you're throwing form the powder measure, especially if you loading near maximum. If you're doing light target/plinking loads, you can get away without it.

I 2nd the scale.  The bestthing to do to check the disc's are thrownig the right grain as said above especially when working anywhere near max, but also when near starting loads to prevent squibs.  Weigh whenever you change powder as some powders; Unique to mention one throw a different grain wt with the same charge disc used for 4227.  I always the 1st three and random after and any that look at a different level in the case.  Static from dry air and humidity can change the drop wt of charges as well.

That list looks great to get going.
I agree with everyone else on the scale.  Lee's safety Scale is cheap and very accurate, but it take a while to stop moving.  Its all I have right now, but I do plan to upgrade to a digital soon.  If you are just loading for plinking and general shooting, it will serve you well for checking your thrown charges, its just not the fastest scale out there.

For straight wall cases buy Carbide dies and forget the lube.

I'd not buy the Lee stuff personally but folks say it works. I'll probably never find out first hand. I use their Auto Prime for all my priming chores and do recommend it and use their shell holder sets also. I have probably over 100 shell holders easily from Lee, RCBS, Redding, Hornady and Lyman. Many are duplicates of course but I like to be able to lay hands on what I need without having to hunt for it.

DO NOT reload without a scale to double check powder weight. But by the same token I don't weight each charge. I'd buy an RCBS Uni-flow powder measure and charge cases with it.

I am going to assume you are going to start with 38/357.  You have a reloading handbook, correct?  If you have the Lee reloading handbook, it has the powder conversion chart to help you set your powder measure by volume.

All of the items I have done a strike thru are not really needed for 38s and 357s.  If you used once fired or used brass, you will not have to debur.  If you use carbide dies, you will not need to lube.  If you get the powder thru belling die, you do not need the funnel.  If you don't get the powder thru die, I believe the bottom spout on the powder measure is chamfered and will accept the 38s/357s so again, no funnel needed.  I have 1000s of 38s and 357s and have yet had one long enough to trim with my Lee trim gages.  I have them, but did not need to purchase.  You don't need an impact bullet puller unless you plan to screw up.  As a new loader, DONT screw up.  There, you don't need one.

To get started you need the press, the carbide dies, the Lee hand prime, The powder measure, and a Lee document with the powder conversion chart so you can set your powder charge by volume (vs by weight).  You also need a good reloading block to place your brass in as you work it.  Some of the trays that come in purchased ammo work for this.  Lee, RCBS, etc all make nice ones also.

Just another nickles worth of opinion to help you get started while saving a few bucks for primers, powder, and bullets.

Can you suggest a brand of carbide dies that would be good and a model number or part number and the cost of the carbide dies.

S & W 642,

The Lee Deluxe Dies you have listed are carbide - just get them.
