Getting set up to load BPRC's for a Rolling Block 45/70. Going to be shooting out to about 400 yards. I'm thinking about starting out with a load of about 65 gr by volume with a .060 Walters veggie wad, and a 500gr. bullet. I've shot and loaded smokeless for years and this is going to be a new adventure on my part. Does this sound like a good starting point? All advice and comments will be appreciated.

Hello King,  :D

I'm gonna start off with the Winchester and Remington Cases that I have already. Eventualy go with Star-Line brass. Thought I would start off with Elephant FFg that I have. Lee Shaver said that GOEX FFFg is a good why to go. Primers are Federal Large Rifle. The ole Rollin Block is a Pedersoli that has had a trigger job and tune by Lee Shaver. (took it down to him and watched him work on it and discussed things) From what I can tell by the old micrometers and vernier my OAL is at 2.700.

:D   I have been known to shoot a round or two through my BPCR rifles but I am no where as good as Rdnck and a couple of the other gents on here.  I have been shooting a lot of Elephant and Swiss as of late and doing some experimentation iwth several Lyman projectiles.  I will give you the results as follows out of my .45-70 Pedersoli.  Case: Rem. Primer:F215m,Powder:70 of 2f Elephant,Lube:SPG..Card wad:.060 Veggie,OAL 2.95"............1000fps.............GOOD FOR ELEPHANTS AT 10 YARDS.......MAYBE!!!!!!!!!!!!.  the projo was a lyman #125 at 530grns.  I found that Elephant likes to be stepped on a little so I went to 80 of 2f with the same projo and everything being the same, good accuracy and the fps was 1100.  This load with the Lyman #671 and the #658 which is a really pointy type tip projo gave me very good accuracy (which is most important)and the FPS was 1140 at 2.95 OAL.    Nothing against Goex, but I just cant make it shoot.  I have two cases of both Elephant and Swiss and found that the Swiss shoots the Lyman Postell and the RN(#125) flat out best.  The Elephant at 80 2f shoots the #658 and the #671 outstandingly well.  Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you,but I had to sort through about `120 targets.  I had em all mixed up with the rifles that I shoot(.45-70,.45-120,and the little .50-140-700)   Good luck...............stay safe............King  That charge of 65 of Elephant might push about 900 to 950FPS with.....minute of Elephant accuracy,but....try it anyway.  Each gun and shooter is a critter unto themselves............

LMK how the load works out. I started with 65 grains FF Goex in my Pedersoli roller. Great accuracy up to about 100 yards or so. Couldn't even get on paper at 200 yards. Upped the load to 68 grains and things got a lot better. I am shooting 70 grains now and doing good at 400.

Hey Kid,

   Where are you located?

I'm asking cause there's a Platte County riught across the river from me in MO. If you're in THAT Platte County, maybe we can hook up. It's a lot easier seeing and understanding.

I thought it might be THAT Platte County! I’m across the river in Leavenworth, KS. Where have you been shooting that you’re getting 400 yards????

I belong to Mill Creek Rifle Club in Desoto, and I shoot Silhouette out at Miller, KS. I’ve also shot out at the ST. Louis Bench Rest Club (Wright City), and Tappen Hill.

PCK,

Sorry for the late reply. Sounds like you've got your load figured out!

I'm working this weekend, and shooting a BPCS match down in Texas next weekend. I should be shooting a Silhouette match at Miller KS 20-21 SEPT if you want to hook up and shoot.

Platte Co. Kid: a caveat ‘bout the Coydog. He shoots bullets cast from wheel weights, so watch your rims very carefully! There is still a shortage of wheel weights w/in a 20-mile radius of Ft. Lewis….

Speaking of bullets, is the bullet you intend to shoot “store bought” or home cast? Do you have any idea of the alloy & its diameter vis-a-vis the bore diameter?

Too small or too big a bullet will lead & strip, resulting in non-existent accuracy.

Another issue is bullet lube. White powder (AKA smokeless) lube will not work w/ BP. You’ll need a BP lube, which is designed to keep the fouling soft.

Before I forget, respectfully ask the Coydog to send you an electronic copy of his Pulitzer prize winning article on loading BP cartridges.

Again watch your rims….

POST SCRIPTUM: if  you start to cast your own bullets, the March & April 2002 issues of the “Single Shot Exchange” had a very informative 2-part article on bullet casting.

Thanks for the advice to watch my rims. The bullets are home cast. I aquired a super deal on some PURE Lead or(Pb) for you chemical type pards. Plus I picked up some KESTER ULTRA PURE 63/37 Bars at the local Scrap Yard for a song. The molds that I'm using are the LYMAN 480 Spitzer and the Postell. I'm using Lee Shavers bullet lube which you can shoot all day as long as you use a blow tube between shots. This is grat stuff.

Thanks for the reply and warning.

I'll keep a watch on my rims. I'm using LEE SHAVERS BP wich is fantastik and casting my own. I picked up a bunch of PURE LEAD and some KESTER ULTRAPURE 63/37 Bar for alloying. I'm using the LYMAN 480 Spitzer and the 535 POSTELL. Bullets are cast at 20:1 for starters.

Thanks
