Floating forend?
« on: February 07, 2009, 07:22:21 AM »
Why is plastic and rubber always suggested for floating instead of a metal washer? Seems the plasitc and rubber would just crush in time causing POI shifts and in cold vs hot would have to have slight change. I tried the oring several yrs back and it just didnt help my SL and when I took it out it was deformed. Is it thinking the metal would cause more vibration?

I think it is because that was what was available back when, and it is easier than fitting a metal washer which doesn't conform to the stock hole or screw.  I remember someone fitting a pillar in the front end a while back, don't know how that worked out.

Speaking of forearms and such, I wish they would bring back the coin slot on the forearm screw.  A person doesn't always have a Phillips screwdriver in their pack, but most folks have a nickel or dime in their pocket!

I did this a couple times and it works well enough. Your correct, the idea is to get clearance between the barrel and forend and with the rubber spacer, resting the forend could cause contact.

Personally, I use the "O" ring and neoprene washers as tests. if it works, I either pillarbed or RTV bed the forends. I have only done 1 RTV. it worked very well but I'm not sure it will work all the time. IMHO, pillar bedding is a better more fineate solution.
