Looking for boar hunt in Mid-Atlantic/Mid-South - First Time
« on: December 10, 2009, 01:14:51 PM »
Well, it seems this might be the best place to get answers after Googling without a lot of success for an hour or so....

I am looking to give my Dad a gift for Christmas this year, and he is always talking about sometime doing a Boar Hunt.  Here's what I believe I would be looking for:

Location: We live in PA, so anything in PA would be ideal due to short driving distance.  Also open are:  Maryland, Virginia, maybe Tennessee or North Carolina.  I don;t know that New Jersey has much to offer in the way of Wild Boar hunting....but that would be open too LOL.  Anyone know anything about this place:  http://www.tiogaboarhunting.com/

Type of hunt: My dad would love to hunt with his 44-mag Single-Action Ruger.  I would also envision us bringing a slug gun and 30-30 if a close up shot is not permitted.  I assume a 44 mag will do the job given a good shot and satisfactory range?

Experience:  Neither of us has hunted at all in the past few years, although we are both avid shooters and have hunted whitetail, small game, and some waterfowl in the past.  So, we are not in any way experienced, especially for Boar.

Cost:  Obviously, cheap is good :).  I know that usually, you get what you pay for...but we don't need a lot of royal comforts.  I would rather have an enjoyable hunt with experienced and kind guides than stay in a place my wife would love :)

Timeframe: 2-3 day hunt

Any info is greatly appreciated!

I went on my first Boar hunt back in April, and I'll be going back every April until the good lord calls me home ! check them out,you wont be disappointed. $450 to shoot a boar.they get it out of the woods, skin and quarter it,and take pictures of you and your trophy. They have a Lodge you and your hunting party can stay at if so desired.

Give the following a look see.  You can google them up.  I've hunted at 2 of them, in years past, and the other 2 get good reports.

1. Clarkrange hunting lodge
2. Caryonah hunting lodge
3. Wilderness hunting lodge
4. Loshbough hunting lodge[www.tennboar.com/]

All are located in Tenn., in the Cumberland Mountains.

This photo is from my 2005 hunt at Tioga Preserve in north-central Pennsylvania.  I had a great time with my friends and the hunt was challenging, too.  Meals were exceptionally good!!!  My guide was named Karl and he gave me 1st Class treatment even though I'm just a regular guy.

This Spring 2010, I'm headed to Double D Ranch is Ohio.  You're welcome to share the ride and fuel cost from Pennsylvania if you wish.  I'm currently living in Lancaster County.  My distant cousins in western Ohio and eastern Indiana swear by Double D Ranch but truthfully I've never been there before.

Hey TR  I have been to Double D in McAurthur Ohio.  Small place but they treat you great and the prices are reasonable.  Check out there special events for prices.   Shot a hog there a couple of years ago.  Went #1 in the nation for rifle.  Nice area and his wife is a great cook.  www.ddranch.com

dan61psu- I hunted at the Clarkrange, TN location memtioned. It's owned by Ken Moody, ex-military officer Desert Storm. It's old but hunting there with a guide and dogs was fun. I took a 269# black russian boar with my T/C White Mtn Carbine black powder. Another hunter took one about the same with a .454 casul. Both hunts were started at 7 a.m. and both were done by 11 a.m. I had a dog named Angus and he was a great pointer, so whenever he went I point I went to a knee and got ready for the black blur....
