Looking for new general purpose shotgun
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:07:30 AM »
I currently use an Ithica 37 12 GA with a 2 3/4 inch chamber fixed mod choke. I like the gun and use it for all of my shotgun hunting, but for Turkey hunting I would like to get another that can shoot 3 inch or even 3.5 inch shells and take choke tubes. Would like to stay under $1000. Currently looking at a BPS 26 inch brl ($430) and a Benelli supernova camo 28 inch brl ($560). The BPS is blue steel & walnut while the supernova looks like it is rubber coated all over. Does anyone have bad experiences with either of these. I will also looked at an 870 Wingmaster ($699). I have read the express or entry level 870s are not as reliable as the wingmaster. Lots of choices and unfortunately I can't get to actually try out some of these prior to the buy. At this time I am leaning toward the BPS or supernova.

Turkey hunting is a one shot game two at most as it flies off or if it's not quite dead and a follow up is needed. There is sure no need to buy the most expensive gun out there for it. A Remington 870 Express is plenty of gun for the job and everyone who makes choke tubes makes them for it. The only thing that might cause me to say go more expensive is if you want to get a gas operated semi auto to help tame the recoil of those monster shells you plan to shoot in it. But what the heck other than while figuring out what load works best you'll only be shooting a shot or two a season so maybe that doesn't really matter to you.

Personally I'd go with the 870 Express as it's about as cheap as a quality gun is gonna be and that's all you need. For that matter you could get an NEF single shot and if you can get the same quality choke tubes for it then it too would do the same job and even cheaper.

On the left is my turkey gun.  It's an 870 turkey special.  It got it's good and bad points.  It kicks enough to dislodge your teeth.  It also has terrible balance and "jumps" enough that you really cant shoot it, even with 2 3/4" shells, for fun.  On the other hand, it's light weight and you can carry it for miles.  If you have one hung up it's not hard to rest on your knees.  It's got a short barrel which is good for crawling and sneaking.  I fire about 4 shots a year with it.

I've threatened to sell it several times, mostly to buy a turkey BPS.  I love the BPS, but the turkey model is nearly a pound heavier and that's always held me up.

On the right is my wifes/loaner turkey gun.  It's the newer SBE II and it's an absolutely awesome gun.  I can't understand why anyone would buy anything different for a woman or old person.  The recoil tech is great, the cheek piece works wonders and the gun is nice with any range of loads.  The down side is that it's an auto.  It will fail to cycle, fail to lock up, etc...  It also is moderately annoying to load, but for turkey purposes that's a small complaint.

If I was going to get just one gun for anything I'd buy a BPS.  If I had a BPS and wanted a turkey gun I'd probably get another 870.  If I was a beginner or needed reduced recoil I'd go with the Benelli.

Thanks for the response guys.

I think I was using turkey hunting as a justification to myself that I "need" another shotgun. I really think I want another gun to serve as a general purpose gun. I likely will not small game hunt or shoot trap any more than normal, which is minimal. I was browsing the store and kind of liked the Benelli super nova camo, which is odd for me because I generally favor wood & blue steel. They have a BPS (wood & blue steel) for under $450 which also looked nice.

Searching the web, I got the impression that the 870 quality that has been established over the past 50 years is limited to the wingmaster, and the newer express line doesn't have the quality of the 870 of old. I think I will add the 870 express line to my search as well.

As far as autoloaders goes, are the gas operated actions better than the inertia actions of the benelli line? I was interested in the Browning gold. Now I see they are no longer offered new except the 10 GA models. (It looks that way from the Browning site). I haven't looked at the "Silver" line yet.

Thanks again for your replies.  I was wondering if anyone had particularly bad experiences with BPS guns or the Benelli Super Nova.  Just collecting information.

My objection is to the Nova is purely asthetic.  I think it looks like a space rifle.  It's guts appear to work like an 870 and it has a similar feel.  The BPS is better.

I think you are on track with a 12ga pump. It is easier to get barrels for a 3" chambered gun. I also think you can get by fine with a 3" chamber. A Mossberg 500, Rem 870, BPS & others would get you by fine. I would take a 26" BPS with a 3" chamber. Used ones can be found in the $300 range.

Why not get a used Browning BPS and not look back? It's a great gun. 3" chambers. Comes with screw-in chokes. Turkey chokes are readily available. Specialty barrels like rifled slug barrels are readily available Great gun. Cost is about $300 to $400 used.

I have been using a Remington 870 Super Magnum (I'm assuming this is in the "express" line you speak of) with a black synthetic stock and black metal for the last four waterfowl seasons.  I have shot a lot of shells through it.  I have carried it through a lot of marshland.  It has never given any sort of hint at performing less than perfectly.  My shotgun looks and functions like new.  I take considerable pains to take care of the gun and keep it clean.  After every hunting weekend I clean it and leave a light coating of oil on the metal surfaces, including the barrel and receiver which are coated with some sort of rough textured stuff (parkerizing?  tefflon?).  If the gun gets wet during a hunting outing, I will dry it, clean it, and oil it ASAP when I get to the house/hotel.  But I don't baby it.  I haven't fallen in the marsh with it, but I have splashed some water on it while walking into the marsh in the dark, splashing after downed ducks, etc.  It comes with the territory of duck hunting that a shotgun is going to get wet sometimes.

I have read that some of these 870s seemed to be susceptible to rust.  Maybe I haven't had this experience because of my frequent care and coating of surfaces with oil.  Maybe the reports were in the context of hunting around salt water -- salt water is more corrosive and would tend to rust a gun more rapidly.  Maybe the problem was identified by Remington and corrected.  I did see one report that Remington had changed the surface coating -- maybe adopting tefflon coating -- to address this issue, but I could not corroborate this report.

I'm a completely sold 870 express user.  I bought mine for about $290 with the express desire to have an inexpensive shotgun that I would not worry about getting wet when duck hunting -- a new activity for me at the time.  I reasoned that such a cheap shotgun could readily be replaced if it got worn out or fouled by the harsh waterfowl hunting conditions.  I still think that is a solid way to think about the gun.  If it goes to hell in four years, buy another one for about $300.  It has not been my experience, however, that the gun degrades rapidly and needs to be thrown away and replaced.  As I say, my four year old gun look and functions like new.  Take care of them and they will last plenty long enough.

Thanks for all the replies. Although I mentioned Turkey hunting, I guess I was using that as an excuse for another shotgun. I still have my Ithica and will likely get another pump in the future (camo 870). In the mean time I got a Browning sliver lightning. It is the same as a silver hunter but the stock is gloss finished and the grip is I guess what they call "prince of Whales". I wanted to try a gas auto to see if it really reduces recoil. Some of my friends are on my case saying autos are just expensive single shots. We will see as soon as the weather allows. It is only a 3 inch chamber, so I am second guessing about not getting a 3.5 inch chamber. I got a Primo tight wad turkey choke tube (.670) that is supposed to be good for both lead and heavy shot. I have only used lead in the past and looked at heavy shot at Gander Mountain today. It seems a bit expensive $40 for 5 rounds.

I wouldn't worry one bit about a 3.5" chamber over the 3". I think there is still some rebate on most Remington HD ammo. Gander is usually high, check midwayusa or anywhere else. Something seems amiss on that 5 shells for $40 price. Usually it's $30 something for 10 shells. I would use a few lead to make sure where you pattern prints then confirm with a HD load or 2 then hunt. Not that a guy really needs the higher cost premium ammo to bag a turkey, though I usually use it.

I haven't shot a Benelli, but I own a BPS.  I have nothing but great things to say about it.  It works flawlessly, even when i'm putting in days of 300 to 500 shots at the range.
If you do decide on a BPS, make sure you get the barrel configuration you want.  I'm looking into adding another barrel (my 30" full choke SUCKS for skeet and SC) and they are not cheap!
A replacement barrel will cost me what i paid for this gun when I bought it used.  i did get a smoking deal on it though.

I also use a 870 Express Super Magnum for turkey. Identical to the one Alsatian described. I use a Mossberg 930 Field for everything else. The only reason I bought it was the price ($299). It has been a great gun. Torture tested to death and it just keeps on going. The 3 1/2" Roman Candles will jar your eyes loose, but they do pattern great. The 3" work just fine for turkey. The 870 platform is a good as they get, you can't go wrong with them.

I've been shooting a Remington Wingmaster 870 12g shotgun with a 30 inch full choke ribbed trap barrel quite a few of decades at clay targets, grouse, squirrels, gambels quail, valley quail, mtn quail, bandtailed pigeons & rabbits with lead shot using Win AA 12g hulls loaded with 1 1/8oz of 4's,5's,6's & 7 1/2's powered by 35.3gr of Win 540  @ 1425+fps  and 1 1/4oz of the same shot sizes powered by the same brand & load of powder @ 1330 fps these loads will rock your socks.I have a skeet barrel & a 28" field barrel with Rem Chokes. These are the old ducks & geese loads used when lead was legal for waterfowl according to a duck hunting friend who turned me on to this powder.Me and another club member used to head to Bower Wholesale on Hill St in LA  in the late 1970'& 1980's with my 1964 chev 3/4 ton p/u buying 12 lb kegs of Win 540 lots of shot, wads & once fired Win AA hulls .We'd stop by Andrews Sporting Goods(precursor to Turners) or Grant Boys Sporting Goods and load up with 5000 or more CCI 209 shotgun primers.I don't need a turkey barrel my 30 inch trap barrel with my 2 3/4 inch win aa loads work just fine on anything that walks, crawls or flys,i've also used blue dot with 1 3/8 oz shot but it blew my pattern up found out on a trip when I fired at a grouse in the road and created about a 10 foot circle but not one piece of shot hit the grouse ,never had much success with 1 1/2oz of shot in a rem hull.

I also own an Ithaca 37 12 GA with a 2 3/4 inch chamber fixed mod choke. If I were going to buy a new shot gun today wit6h a buget of $1000.00 it would be a new Ithica 37 with the 3 inch chamber and changeable Briley chokes. Ships with hard case, Ithaca M37 owner's manual, and trigger lock for safety.
I have a whole safe full of shot guns but only two pump shot guns both Ithaca 37's.
The rest are all OU's.

I've always spoke highly of the 37 and my experience with it has been great, until a pheasant hunt this last november.  It was in Southwestern Kansas in an area with sandy soil and it was raining.  The sandy crud got into the action and absolutely locked it up.  That night we tried to tear it apart to clean it and it turned into a major ordeal.  It is not easy to get into the guts.

There continues to be no reason to own anything other than a BPS.
