Springtime surprise
« on: March 06, 2009, 07:33:14 AM »
Well, what a day. Got up at 5:00 it was 57 went to meet my buddy came home it was 64 and a heavy package was waiting on the porch. The war dept needs to work out some more. It was a Dom Carpenter swivel gun. 64 and a cannon; doesn't get any better than that in early Michigan March. LOL cannon will be called the "Lil Beast".

It certainly seems like you could honestly describe this as a fine day that turned into a good day, and later became a great day; I hope you'll post some pics.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Navygunner,  Sounds like Christmas on your porch in the Springtime. Today, I woke up to 3 new inches of snow with bear cub tracks in the 2 track. Don't know where Mama is, tonite Doe and fawn crusing thru woods. Michigan will be Michigan.

Dan you know the best way to see a bear is to take someone slower than you. That way, like the saying goes, you don't have to out run the bear, just your slow friend.

We have some family in the UP who use blanks to scare two bears away from their bird feeders.

Dan ,I'm sure you are not far from bears ,eagles and all kinds of wildness !

If you went to Alaska or anywere simlar in your neck of the woods , there are LOTS of bears and Bald Eagles in
those climates . The eagles where what I liked most as they are our National Symbol and rare in Colo. maybe one or two every three to for winters when the winter are tough up in the hills .

To see them flying around in the harbors 5 and 6 in sight most of the day is something I'll never forget .

I've seen one bear in the wild while wandering around in the hills . It was a small black bear that was cinnimon colored . As soon as I saw him , he saw me and he bumbbled off up the trail .

Speaking of bears, this picture was taken from inside our house (in Colorado) looking out our dining room window.  This is a boar and sow.  We see bears all the time.  These two are about 50 feet from our house.
Nice to watch but they are hell on bird feeders as far as breaking them into little pieces.

You know something Blaster, I love anything that has to do with natural history, if there is something on about bears, (from polar to panda) you can be sure I'll be watching, but I don't think I'd be feeling all that comfortable with those two that close to my abode.

It's Dom's 18th century swivel gun with a slap-lock installed. Primarily I'll use it on my CW naval display table. Can't prove the swivel guns were actually used bu the Union navy but the Adm blocking Charelston Harbor requested 100 of them for anti torpedo boat defense. General Butler up in NC requested a navy launch with two swivel guns installed for river patrol. I'll be blowing smoke once my powder arrives.

Navygunner, you've got good taste, this one's a keeper. OK Dominick, to be more specific, that one's a keeper.

Yeppers!!! That's it minus the slaplock. I'm using 209 primers but I'm sure i could use friction primers or linstock should the slaplock suffer a casualty. LOL ;D

Yes, that is a nuisance tag.  I don't know how many strikes they can have against them before they are forced into bear heaven.  Most of these critters are very shy and will take off when a human is spotted.  Some just about refuse to leave until the 12 gauge is used against them but I use only the rubber/plastic Double 0 pellets and I shoot them on the back side ONLY.  These critters were here in this territory first so we just learn to tolerate them as best we can.

I apologize for hijacking this thread and now I'll remain silent! :-[

I have a nosey, loud mouth neighbor that could use a couple of those rubber bullets in her back side. Apparently she doesn't like me testing blanks in the drive way (actually in the garage with the door open). She also hates the sounds of table saws, sanders and any other power tools.

That was last summers complaint. I'm sure she'll have a different one this year, especially once my barrel shows up from Dom. Any way you could snag that tag so I can put it on her?

barefiel76, really sounds like you are a candidate for getting one of the Dom Carpenter's great thunder mugs.  That'd give the "ole crow" neighbor something to really complain about. ;D
